EXCLUSIVE: Spider-Man 4 Circling John Malkovich, Anne Hathaway

No matter the superhero franchise, when it comes time to make a sequel, people mainly want to know one thing: Which villains will be in it? Currently, fans are trying to crack the mystery of Spider-Man 4's bad guys; rumors and speculation had it that every actress in Hollywood was trying out for the sexy villainess Black Cat, or that Dylan Baker's Curt Connors would finally get to transform into the Lizard in this installment. Now, though, Movieline has confirmed with sources close to the film that Raimi's sequel is circling John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway to play Spider-Man's adversaries, and neither evildoer is quite what you might have expected.

If negotiations proceed according to plan, Malkovich will be playing Spider-Man's nemesis the Vulture, who packs a punch despite his advanced age. The Vulture is able to fly through the air and brandish his sharp wings to attack Spider-Man.

As for Hathaway, that's where things get tricky.

Gut reaction: The Vulturess is retarded.
Should we expect a Green Goblinette in the fifth installment?

  • FilmFather says:

This is a major disappointment if it's true. I'm no fanboy, but as a fan of the classic villains growing up, I've been patiently waiting for the Lizard payoff in SM4. He's hands-down my favorite Spidey bad guy, and Curt Connors' complicated situations (with both the whole Lizard thing and trying to reunite with his family) makes for a meaty storyline.
The Vulture is one of the dumbest-looking and decrepit villains in the Spider-Man franchise. I don't care if someone as amazing as Malkovich takes on the role, I can't get past the cheesy outfit and the geezer head sticking out of it. Why not just put some knee-high black socks on him and have him yell at kids to stay off the front lawn of his evil lair?

  • Furious D says:

First, ditch The Vulturess. That's lamer than OJ Simpson's last criminal defense strategy. Black Cat's fine, and I'm sure with a little padding, she'll fill the outfit out well.
As for Malkovich as the Vulture, you really can't go wrong with Malkovich as a freaky villain. So here's what they can do:
    1. The Vulture and Black Cat are both interested in Curt Conners' research for their own profit. Vulture wants the healing properties to reverse his aging, and she wants to sell it to the highest bidder.
    2. While trying to steal said research, they get in each other's way and trigger the transformation into the Lizard.
    3. Spidey & Black Cat join forces to beat the others, because the Vulture has figured out a way to control the Lizard. Big battle royale, Vulture's taken down, the Lizard gets cured, for now, and the Black Cat tries to rip off Spiderman, and gets locked up for it.
You get the moral hazard of Spidey being faced with curing or killing his teacher/mentor, the sex appeal of The Black Cat, the freakiness of The Vulture, and a payoff for the Lizard with potential for future appearances.
It's not rocket science, it's making a comic book movie.

  • Old No.7 says:

What this franchise really needs is some Malathion.

  • Mikey says:

The only one happy about any of this is James Franco.

  • The Winchester says:

If they're just gonna start making shit up, I propose Malkovich should play a villain simply named "Malkovich", a NY actor who's just tired of Spiderman's shenanigans.

  • duke says:

is raimsi on drugs, they want human faces for badguys ,he should yous kingpin, tombstone, silvermane, his daughter or hammer head.dont fu.k spidy up.

  • stolidog says:

If they're gonna make up new villains, I think they need to morph Franco into the new evil-doer, The Nudist.

  • Damian Maraio says:

Wow. Is Raimi insane? I can deal with Malkovich as the Vulture, he's a great actor. But the awesome characters that already exist are not good enough? He needs to create "The Vultress"? I don't even believe this latest rumor. And why do the studios think we want or need more villans in each sequel? F'em all.

  • agniyo says:

My guess is the Vulturess is a "Blue Harvest" style decoy. I hope so. Franco as the Nudist would definitely be more compelling than Anne Hathaway as the Vulturess.

  • craig says:

I'd like to see the Rhino

  • Anonymous says:

I think it's just a ruse, no fanboy wants to see her unless she is the Black Cat

  • Damon says:

    I like this.

  • nspan says:

ugh. Malkovich? wasn't there enough ham and cheese in Spidey 3??

  • Dknight006 says:

so let me get this straight, instead of at least trying to mirror or take from the comics and build around it, their just makin shit up as they go along, right ? Well, I guess our only hope for a decent comic book movie is in Favreau's hands now. But at least with him we know something great is about to happen, come 2010.

  • dnnyboy says:

    That sounds about right.

  • steve r says:

    hey no spoilers!

  • Miget says:

Forget Vulture, that's just another goblin flying character...been there done that. Why not setup the lizard for the near end while spidey battles like Kraven,Rhino or hell even Shocker. Someone like the Rock would give shocker a better character, think of the cool technology they could design for his shocker suit. Kraven would be awesome given someone like Butler or Del Torro give him that mean jacked up hunter. Rhino of course would be someone's henchmen, i could see mysterio with him since mysterio is probably the most human bad guy as far as a fight goes. Whatever, if i could atleast interest one of you then my ideas are better then what appears to be Raimi's ideas. And yes Vultress is a bad idea, just like what Ratner did to x3.

  • Mason says:

If SM4 comes out with Vulture and a vultress I WILL NOT watch it. We have so many things that could happen instead of that cheese. I want to see more Venom along with Lizard, Black Cat or Rhino. Vulture was one the more ignorant villains thay created. Lets just make the Mole or Dung Beetle. Let's keep it in line with the comic at least a little. I mean, Venom and Goblin were the best but lets have Venom in the SM3 for a total of 3 minutes and then gone. They wasted more time with Parker dancing with ho's then one of the best villains ever. Total waste of a movie. It was like watching a masterpiece like the Matrix and then going to see Matrix 2. You go into the theater with a massive bone only to walk out unable to have an erection for weeks, ok maybe days, but thats not the point. We take X-Men 3 and put Magneto in an old man garb, we totally destroy everything about Sabretooth from X-Men 1 just to put him as Wolverines brother in Origins and now we have no Goblin, Venom or Doc Ock! Kinda like 2 face in Dark Knight for 5 minutes and kill him. It makes no sense. And to all these "actors" who want to do something more challenging or something different instead of doing these sequels i.e. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, etc. remember these films made you financially secure and the fans are what made you. You should be happy you're not asking, "do you want fries with that."

  • Dave says:

It's official. This series has gone from bad (Spiderman 3) to completely terrible. Raimi needs to be removed from this franchise.
We are currently entering the "Batman Forever / Batman and Robin" era of Spiderman movies. Let's hope it doesn't last long.

  • Dale says:

Wow. This movie looks like it will be even worse than Spider-man 3...

  • vitalianbeef says:

Malkovich rocks yo. Pyey the myen hees monee.

  • BrutusJr says:

First, Lizard is one of Spidey's best villains. He has so much inner turmoil going on between his family, his lost arm, Peter Parker, his Lizard persona, etc. He would make a great antagonist. Hopefully you are kidding about "Vulturess" which just sounds plain stupid. Malkovich is a great actor, but The Vulture was a lame villain for Spider-man. I didn't care for him in the comic and I'm sure he won't be any better in a movie. Hathaway could probably pull off Black Cat, so that sounds O.K. if they go that way. They really need Lizard this time. Avatar (Cameron) is creating 10 foot blue aliens to carry their show. Lizard would just have to look like a little beefier version of the velociraptors in Jurassic Park. Minus the Lizard (which I am still pulling for), they should go with Kraven the Hunter or Mysterio,

  • Oopie Poopie says:

Screw this, if Bruce Campbell isn't a villain I ain't going to see it.

  • rich says:

Didn't Malkovich turn down the Goblin role in the first movie because he was too good to do super hero flicks? Well John now you're wearing a green bird suit in a sequel. Way to stay ahead of the curve Shakespeare.
