Vampire Diaries Scores CW's Highest Premiere Ratings Ever

America's fascination with vampires won't be waning anytime soon, to judge by last night's Vampire Diaries numbers. CW's gamble on the pop culture trend paid off last night when the network's vampire venture became the network's most-watched series premiere -- ever. How big was it?

Diaries made a mockery of this week's Melrose Place series opener by attracting over twice as many viewers. In its audience of 4.8 million, females 18-34 (the most blood-thirsty demographic) nabbed a 3.1 rating.

Movieline seems to recall 90210 premiering with a 4.9 rating, but if the CW is crowing "record," maybe those 90210 ratings slipped after the final figures were calculated. Either way, congratulations to Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson on a successful return to television! Werewolves, someday you'll get your turn.
