From the Director of Napoleon Dynamite Comes Gentlemen Broncos, Your Nephew's New Favorite Movie
Hey, here's something that had been off my radar til now: Gentlemen Broncos, the next movie from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess. A new trailer has been released for the film and it looks like Napoleon all right, but with Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement added in for good measure.
Ironically, I was first introduced to Clement through his performance in the thoroughly aggravating Napoleon knockoff Eagle vs. Shark, but he seems far more tolerable here when actually working with Hess himself. As an acclaimed sci-fi novelist who steals an idea from poor Michael Angarano, Clement pitches his performance toward the outer stratosphere, but...it looks like it kind of works? In fact, for how craven a pastiche this film is (Wes Anderson, reinterpreted for a D&D crowd), I find the trailer surprisingly tolerable.
Except that whole thing about a Mormon director asking Sam Rockwell to deliver a lispy "trannie" performance. That's a little awkward.
VERDICT: Cautious interest.
