How Much Will the Michael Jackson Memorial Cost Hilariously Broke California?

michaeljacksoncardiac.jpg

California is a lovely, cash-strapped state where public workers are rewarded with heavily slashed paychecks while our governor spends his own money on Humvees and life-sized replicas of himself. In short, California is the perfect place to host the Michael Jackson memorial because like the entertainer itself, it is famous and it's already spent all of its money. And yet this Jackson service will be a costly affair, indeed. How much will it drain from already-empty state coffers?

$2.5 million, E!'s Leslie Gornstein claims. Most of that money will go toward the 1400 police workers and countless public workers designed to keep the peace outside LA's Staples Center, where the Jackson family and promoter AEG will be holding tomorrow's memorial. Naturally, AEG has declined to pick up the extra costs incurred by the state at this time. Oh no, the characteristic compassion we've come to associate with Joe Jackson and the tyrannical promotional company AEG has been dashed.

The way I see it California is fucked for a good long time, so why not live it up and ride the flaming carcass to hell?

  • Smooth Criminals says:

These people are cleaning up on Jackson's death and sticking it to taxpayers, and the LAPD is wasting additional resources going after people who re-sell their "tickets." Great priorities, as always.
As usual, the government caters to business, the taxpayers pick up the tab, and individuals are criminalized for their harmless sliver of the pie. Why doesn't law enforcement go after all the CA state officials who stole taxpayer funds for personal use and never had to pay it back, and were allowed to quietly 'step down' without so much as a public apology or acknowledgment?
This whole thing is grotesque beyond belief.
The entire government of California, including the LA City Council and Mayor, should be recalled immediately and re-built from the ground up.

Why shouldn't the governor of California be able to spend his own money on Humvees (which he no longer has) and anything else he wishes? It's his own money that he earned from the various movies he's done. In case you didn't know, Governor Schwarzenegger does not draw a salary as Governor, so he isn't spending "the taxpayers' money" in anyway on anything he buys personally. Get your facts straight before shooting off your mouth.

The broke state of California is spending $2.5 million on Jackson's memorial?
    WTF!
It's time to disband the state, exile every level of government to a small island off Antarctica, and give the land back to the Indians.

So do something about it, people. E-mail the Mayor and the Governator. Or, if you want to make it short and sweet, they're both on Twitter. Flood them with complaints.
BTW - how about spreading some of these costs to the so-called "news" media. The incessant coverage is just making the situation worse, and they certainly haven't given up selling commercial time for those evening magazine shows.
    OK, getting off soapbox now.

  • The influx of tourism, the full airlines, and the full hotels, more then makeup for the expense. It's like having the Olympics in your town for a day.........or at least a mocha colored child molester in your town for a day.
But hey California I still want my TAX REFUND!!!

The memorial of M.J can also be seen as a stranger in his home town,California has the right to give him its last respect despite their broke nature.
Besides,we all live to die some day,so what the Governor has done will be no exception by his love ones when he is gone.
I think i admire Governor Schwarzenegger.

  • sweetbiscuit says:

Thanks so much, Lavern. We'll take you up on your offer to help pay. Where should California send the bill? Cuz I don't think "his legacy" is offering to cover the costs.

Wow. Comment of the Week nominee, here.
