Rosanna Arquette

Playing offbeat, unpredictable coquettes with an earthy sensuality was Rosanna Arquette's stock-in-trade back in the '80s when she earned raves with Desperately Seeking Susan, After Hours and New York Stories.

Returning from a six-year stay in Europe prompted by her romance with musician Peter Gabriel, Rosanna Arquette picked up where she'd left off, portraying a pierced druggie in Pulp Fiction and one of the kinky car freaks in David Cronenberg's Crash. Her newest screen effort is the music-industry satire Sugar Town, in which, as she puts it with a cheerful laugh, "I play an aging actress. What a stretch!"

Sugar Town features a cast of rockers that includes ex-X cofounder John Doe, ex-Power Station vocalist Michael Des Barres and ex-Duran Duran heartthrob John Taylor. The latter plays Arquette's husband, who utters the memorable line, "On that tour, I made it a point of only getting blow jobs." Considering that she's currently married to restaurateur-turned-record-industry-exec John Sidel and counts musicians Steve Porcaro and James Newton Howard among her exes, does Arquette figure she'll ever outgrow her attraction to rockers? "Never." And what about her directors--will they ever outgrow their propensity for revealing her breasts on-screen?

"Funny you should ask that," she grins. Turns out she's fielding just such a request from her director on The Whole Nine Yards, which also stars Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry. "I've come to a point where, you know, I have a child, I've breast-fed, so do I really want to? I have real breasts, so I'm not thrilled about doing that. I think you can do something so much sexier in lingerie." Being a mom and all, does Arquette see tamer roles in her future? "I've played every kind of pregnant teenager, runaway person there is. And it's a relief to mature," she declares. "I'll always work. I'm not striving to be top of the A list. I mean, if I could have a career like Gena Rowlands, that's what I'd want."
