Naomi Campbell: Girl #75
"I'm a hardworking bitch," says Naomi Campbell, who came to fame via modeling and has expanded her career to include appearing on TV (in "Absolutely Fabulous") and in music videos (with Michael Jackson), singing (with Vanilla Ice) and making movies (with Sarah Jessica Parker in Miami Rhapsody). Who knows if she'll score in any of these categories, but one thing's for sure-- she's come a long way since her schoolgirl days in London. Now that Campbell's starring in Spike Lee's Girl Six, we thought it was time to catch up with her by cell phone.
ALYEA SALEM: In Unzipped you're glued to your phone. Is it true that you're never without one?
NAOMI CAMPBELL: I always have a phone with me. You're not supposed to use a cellular phone on planes, but occasionally it goes off. The flight attendants aren't pleased.
Q: Tell me about playing a phone-sex operator in Spike Lee's Girl Six.
A: I play Phone Sex Girl 75 who's a single parent. I sing backup vocals in a band but I don't make enough money, so I work in a phone-sex office too.
Q: Did you do the phone-sex scenes from a script?
A: They were totally improvised.
Q: Did you have to audition for the role?
A: I auditioned three times. I love auditioning.
Q: I've never heard anyone say that before.
A: Well, film people don't realize what models are all about and when I get a chance to meet with them, they find out there's so much more to me than my modeling and photographs.
Q: Does it bother you that people say you're a bitch?
A: No, it doesn't bother me one bit. As I said, I'm a hardworking bitch. I do what I want to do. Life is so short--you have to go for it.
Q: You must meet a lot of men. How do they react to you?
A: Real men react to me fine, they're not intimidated. If they're not real men, they don't approach me.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: People say I'm generous, Michael Jackson called me a "baby fawn."
Q: Do you see yourself acting in 10 years?
Q: If tomorrow were your birthday, what would be the perfect gift to get you?
A: A baby [laughs].
