5 Terrifying Scenes You Won't Find In Horror Films
5. The Monster-In-The-Closet-Is-A-Man scene in Wendigo: I'm cheating a bit here. Wendigo is technically a horror film, but indie Jedi Larry Fessenden specializes in making horror films in which men are the real monsters. Wendigo may take its name from the shape-shifting Native American myth, but it's really about a Volvo-driving Manhattan family that runs afoul of a townie while en route to a borrowed country house. The couple's traumatized son may attribute what's happening to the supernatural being of the title, but the reality is much more chilling — and will make you think twice before dreaming of a quiet little weekend cottage in the country.

Begging the critic's pardon...and forgive the fascism, but...why was this "article", a happy-time juicebox of "ain't bloodletting grand?", even allowed on the Internet?
Why? It's the Internet. The totality of Man. Like all color together, makes black. >: (
"Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe."
I would like to offer up the fire extinguisher scene in Irreversible. I doubt anyone who was in the cinema didn't know what was coming later on in the film but the opening scene in the nightclub was quite a shocker.
What started out as a bit of "typical" movie violence soon silenced the whole theatre as the camera lingered and it became very uncomfortable to watch.
SD,
I'd forgotten about 'Irreversible.' Harrowing stuff. Great choice. Thanks.
I would add the rape scene in Deliverance.
Oh man, that DEFINITELY qualifies. I'd completely forgotten about that scene. Squirm city.
Great topic. How about the end of "Audition" I've never even see it, but have been told it's just too much to sit through.
It might not be so bad if you know it is coming but it shocked me. It is a good film though. You could still enjoy it if you watched it up to that point and fast forwarded through if it was too tough.
I haven't seen 'Audition.' I'm too afraid.
Ooh, what about the curb-stomp scene in "American History X" That was wicked sick!
That would have been Number 6.

I nominate the entire last 30 minutes of 'A Serbian Film'... basically unwatchable, unless one is a total sociopath.
