What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Remake On the Way — Let the Casting Speculation Begin

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? remake

Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett? I'm so on the spot: "Walter Hill is planning to write and direct a remake of 1962’s What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, which was directed by Robert Aldrich and famously starred rival acting legends Bette Davis, as the former child star Baby Jane Hudson, and Joan Crawford as her crippled sister Blanche. [...] The announcement is sure to trigger lots of speculation over which current actresses can step into the roles so vividly created by Davis and Crawford. 'The two equal leads demand great performers – that is a given,' Hill said. 'The intensity of the gothic storyline makes a reconfiguration of the drama still a potentially searing experience. The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period. It needs to resonate the golden age of Hollywood.'" [THR]

Comments

  • Faye Dunaway ( a reprise of her role in Mommy Dearest?)

  • sophie says:

jolie as baby jane, aniston as blanche

    • S.T. VanAirsdale says:

Inspired! Walter Hill's big on violence, too, so it might be the right director for those two as well.

  • Susan Serandon and Annette Bening.

/okay maybe not really, but everyone's throwing every conceivable pair of actresses it seems...

  • TheContext says:

Charlize Theron (go watch her munch the ugly, badly lit scenery in Snow White and the Hunstman) and, I don't know, dig up Katherine Hepburn and prop her up on the other side of the room?

  • The Pope says:

Meg Ryan and Katherine Heigl (Heigl goes brunette).

  • Shawn Gordon says:

    Meryl Streep and Glenn Close

  • Glenn Close as Jane, Joan Allen as Blanche

  • Frederic Salgado says:

Why bother remaking this classic. Movie... I wish Hollywod would not tinker with the classics and leave them alone There is no need to re make this movie

  • Morgan says:

i don't think i can beat tilda swinton/cate blanchett as a casting combo. jessica lange would be a good baby jane, but maybe its just because she already played big edie bouvier and there's a few parallels. Anyway, if they have to remake old movies (which will be done) this is one I would actually want to see. I liked the original but there's definitely room to improve it

  • Morgan says:

jodie foster? just because she was an actual child star. the role would be totally different for her as well.

  • Cedric says:

Whats about Kathleen Turner as Baby Jane and Angelica Houston as Blanche? I'd pay to see that!

  • mommie says:

faye dunaway as baby jane and raquel welch as blanche.

  • Troy Leong says:

I'd choose Bette Midler or Jodi Foster as Baby Jane(Bette Davis) and Meryl Streep or Debra Winger as Blanche (Joan Crawford).....someone mentioned Anjelica Huston in the role of Blanche....that's interesting but she's extremely tall and built.....I think she'd be too overpowering over the Jane character. Any opinions?

  • Dustin says:

Meryl Streep and Glenn Close. Period. Either actress could breathe vivid life into either role.

  • Maurice says:

Some of the actresses mentioned above are maybe too young to play those parts, I think it whould be great to see maybe Meryl Streep and Barbra Streisand, they are great actresses, they are icons ( just like Bette Davis & Joan Crawford) and they sure meet the age requirements!

  • sheila vlassic movies fan briano says:

    please use common sense bette mildler as baby jane she can capture the craziness of bette davis and hands down fay dunnaway pleas please plese it will be a picture perfect remake before this geneation destroys it. and use debbie reynolds as the neighbor (;

  • Drew the Longhorn says:

I can't see Dunaway doing another over-the-top role like Baby Jane (scarred from Mommie Dearest experience) but I could see her doing Blanche easily....She's still beautiful enough & could be excellent in the closeups remembering her glory days onscreen (i.e. not too far from the truth).

Jane==>Glenn Close; Susan Sarandon; Annette Benning; Meryl Streep all good ideas. Bette Midler--TERRIBLE. She would chew up the scenery and TOTALLY overact.

You guys are bringing up good points...they can't be too young. 50s+ should be a requirement.

  • Chris says:

Angelica Huston and Cate Blanchet. Maryl Streep or Glenn Close are also good choices!

  • Gray says:

I second that emotion!!! Jessica Lange as Jane to win Best Actress at the Oscars. Subsequently, anyone can play Blanche, but I wish it would be Meryl. I'd love these 2 to go head 2 head since Meryl beat Jessica for the Academy Award in 82' (although everyone knows they should have tied) !!! 2nd in line is Faye Dunaway as Blanche for OBVIOUS reasons 🙂

  • Frederic Salgado says:

This pointless remake wll fail... In the first place what made the original so good was the fact that Bette Davis and Joan Crawford at the time were real rivals. many scenes with them together are real and not acting Bette Davis in real life tormented Joan Crawford and you can see it in her expressions.. Thats not acting thats real Life. This pointless remake will make no sense and I smell another Lone ranger brewing
