Friday Box Office: Tower Heist Barely Paying Off as Puss Holds Fast

One can only imagine what scorchingly candid observations Universal boss Ron Meyer will soon make about his studio's Tower Heist, which is currently more than 30 percent off the pace originally projected for its opening-weekend grosses. America wasn't racing to the latest Harold & Kumar film either, choosing instead a family-friendlier 3-D confection that may yet emerge at the top of the box-office charts. Your Friday Box Office is here.

1. TOWER HEIST: $8,500,000 (new)

2. PUSS IN BOOTS: $7,200,000 ($66,500,000)

3. A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3-D CHRISTMAS: $5,500,000 (new)

4. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3: $2,700,000 ($94,000,000)

5. IN TIME: $1,800,000 ($21,700,000)

Think about it. The title of the film is also a sub-genre. It has Brett Ratner as a director. The trailer actually detracts from any possible appeal each of the respective stars has. Positioning the picture to appeal to the 99% crowd is just a sign of how weak it is. Besides...those people don't see mainstream movies anyway. I'm sure that at least 1/4 of the audience was stoners who got confused on their way to Harold & Kumar and were just too wasted by the time the previews ended to leave.

It's not a bad idea for a movie, sort of an Ocean's 11 type theme, but the trailer wasn't funny. And as much as people might recognize Ratner's name due to his shameless self-promotion, nobody equates him with great, must-see movies. The guy's a hack who made a popular (but certainly not great) movie back in 1998 and hasn't created anything of note since.

Agreed. Marketing didn't interest me at all until Gabourey started talking about Eddie's - ahem - poll. Another problem, who's the name here? This movie is filled with second and third bananas. Nobody goes to see a Ben Stiller movie or an Eddie Murphy movie or a Matthew Broderick movie anymore. Choosing Eddie Murphy was fine, but one of the other roles needed to be filled by an A-lister. Hell, even casting Steve Carell or former A-lister Bruce Willis would've gotten more eyeballs than a couple of whitebread nebbishy dudes.
