VIDEO: David Cross, Keith Olbermann Redeem 17 Minutes of Awkward Chatter with Arrested Development Update

David Cross appeared on Countdown on Monday night, where host Keith Olbermann coaxed an update about the development of the long-gestating movie adaptation of Arrested Development. And that's when things got awkward.

From the subject of Michael Cera's physical appearance (Olbermann says he looks the same today as he did on the series, Cross politely corrects him) to Jason Bateman's choppy recent output (Cross: "You guys got a beef, you can take it up with him") to Olbermann's insomnia-curing "Lizzie Montgomery" story, this is 17 minutes of informational milestones scattered in a cringe-y, wince-y talk-show desert. How did Cross withstand it? Theories abound, but that looks like a lucky and/or mood-altering ballcap if I've ever seen one.

I think you're projecting, I didn't find that awkward at all.

  • OK, Keith Olbermann!

Don't get me wrong...I find the man's smugness insufferable, like how he just assumes that everyone knows that Elizabeth Montgomery prefers to go by "Lizzie", but I don't think Cross found him that way and thought it was a decent interview. And Olbermann's jokes about Bateman were weird and not funny, but they were clearly meant to be jokes and not a dig at his career. They talk about how they all play fantasy baseball together, so they're clearly friends.

  • Totally fair. I guess I just saw that unfunniness reflected in Cross's shifting and half-smile and the rest of the leeway Cross gave Olbermann throughout. That whole "Nice segue!" thing when they move on to the subject of Amber Tamblyn... oof. It just seems the whole time that they're both clearly working, that Cross is so visibly putting up with his interviewer.

A David Cross interview is a haltering awkward affair on the best of days, even with friends like on the marc maron podcast. Detatched sarcasm just comes naturally to him. Didn't see anything unusual here.

I thought it was a GOOD interview. I even agreed with the stuff about us losers who comment on posts like these.
