Rooney Mara Totally Fine With Topless Dragon Tattoo Poster

Back in June, Sony released a controversial teaser poster for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo that featured a topless Rooney Mara and her exposed nipple ring. "I've already started to read posts about how hot Rooney [Mara] is with her nipple ring on full display. That's enough to start my blood boiling," wrote Women in Hollywood's Melissa Silverstein in the wonderfully titled post The Pornification of Lisbeth Salander. "Lisbeth [Salander] is not supposed to be hot. That's one of the reasons why we love her so much." Responding to the general discontent for the first time, Mara doesn't necessarily agree.

"I was supportive of [the poster]," she told EW. "I understand why there was a lot of controversy. People have a hard time with strong females and with nudity. But I think had I been doing something incredibly violent on the poster, people wouldn't have had a problem with it. That sort of says a lot about the world that we live in. It's just a teaser poster. I think it did just that. It teased people."

Speaking of teasing, it seems that Mara had to go through quite a ringer to get David Fincher to cast her in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: two months of meetings and rehearsals, all which culminated in an ultimatum. "David sat me down and gave me this long speech about the part. Then he handed me his iPad, and it had the press release on it. He said, 'I'm prepared to send this out. You have half an hour to let me know if you want the part.'"

She's not supposed to be sexy? I don't remember that from the books. I mean, if you're into tough-looking waifs, she sounds hot. So...

  • AS says:

I can imagine how intimidating it would be to work with Fincher. He's the closest thing to Kubrick since, well, Kubrick. Mara is absolutely right about the poster. You can show whatever violence you want and no one cares but the minute you put something even remotely sexual on a poster look out! It shows how warped peoples values are.

  • morgo says:

except there's something remotely sexual about just about every woman who has appeared on american movie poster since they started making them. It's reasonable that fans of the character were annoyed that the first look at her was stereotypically sexualised, and I think that Rooney Mara among others have failed to grasp the crux of the problem. It's definitely not reflective of warped values that people find the constant sexualisation of women tiresome.

  • cerealface says:

Why is it that violence is an acceptable show of a woman's power, but embracing and celebrating (and yes, even displaying) one's body is not just as empowering? Lisbeth Salander wouldn't give a $hit about showing her body and she wouldn't care what people thought about it if she decided to do so. Naked does not equal victim. I think that is what people need to get through their thick sculls!

  • Cameron says:

All the aggressive tats and peircings just screams 'I was abused in my formative years', there's is nothing sexy about it. It's just s tragic. Girl's like this are only attracted to abusive pricks, if they're attracted to men at all.

  • andrew says:

If it's any consolation to Ms. Silverstein, I don't find Rooney Mara all that attractive.

  • Shannon says:

Wow you are so ignorant. I'm guessing you were attached to your mother's breast far longer
than necessary. Seriously, you sound like trash. People like you should be sterilized.

    My comment was for Cameron.
