Relax, Everyone: Michael Patrick King Is Not Developing a Sex and the City Prequel

There's been a nasty rumor circulating around Hollywood the past few weeks that a Sex and the City prequel is in the works with Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Emma Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen in the lead roles. About that: the series's executive producer Michael Patrick King responded to the rumors and set the record straight.

While answering questions during this afternoon's Television Critics Association summer press tour for his new CBS series 2 Broke Girls, King took a moment to address the SATC gossip:

"I'm not working on any Sex and the City prequel at all. I haven't read Candace's Bushnell's books... My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33 and I took her to 43 -- I don't even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw's parents are... the idea of going backward, making her less evolved, is something that I can't even imagine doing. I have no connection to the prequel."

Not quite the definitive, "No one will ever force a Sex and the City prequel upon you!" declaration you may have hoped for, but given that King wrote and produced both 2008's Sex and the City (which grossed $415.2 million worldwide) and 2010's Sex and the City 2 (which grossed $288.3 million worldwide), take this statement as good news.
