Talkback: Do You Really Want an Entourage Movie?
This morning, while interviewing the cast of Entourage about their final season on HBO (premiering Sunday), Matt Lauer begged to know whether they would consider adapting their series into a film. "We're going to try really hard to make that happen," Kevin Connolly promised the Today host and fans. But are you even interested in an Entourage film?
Ever since HBO programming president Michael Lombardo announced last summer that Entourage's eighth season would be its final one, the network has been fielding questions about taking Vince, Drama, E, Ari and Turtle to the big screen. At the time, Lombardi told press that creator Doug Ellin "wants to write a film, but wants to do it when the story will make sense."
Then, this December, executive producer Mark Wahlberg added fuel to the fire by telling EW, "We want to make [a movie] happen [but] we won't make it if we don't have a good script."
And now, the last televised adventures of Vince & Co. begin on Sunday, leaving just two months worth of episodes and accompanying speculation about an Entourage film -- at least until the series finale on September 11 (what better way to commemorate a national tragedy than with a series closer that references "Pamela Anderson's tit size" and involves Vince shooting another lucrative foreign commercial?*).
But it's not up to me -- it's up to the studios... and the audiences! Would you like to see an Entourage movie, or would you rather not pay $12 to see Turtle pick up more extras for Drama to bang or Drama destroy another car with a six-iron or Ari give someone else awesome U2 tickets? (I personally, would be all for a movie that depicts the gang battling rumors that Vince is gay, as Movieline suggested for the show's seventh season.)
Or would your money be better spent on a film adapted from a series that did not enjoy quite as lengthy a television run -- like Party Down or Friday Night Lights, again? Tell us in the comment section below.
*I'm guessing.

"We won’t make it if we don’t have a good script.”
Now that's a policy?
Sounds like the butthurt writer of the article just doesn't like Entourage, which begs the question... why is he writing an article about Entourage? Just wondering.
I personally would love an Entourage movie. If you don't, then more power to you. I would love to see the Entourage crew together again after this season, and if a movie is the way to do it, then so be it.
Mike, I don't mean to sound "butthurt" but the question posed is totally fair. And my answer is no. I watched for the first couple of seasons and bailed.
I'll second Mike's comment. You know, I was on IMDB and saw the headline "Do you REALLY want an Entourage move?" and I knew it had to come from Movieline. No other movie related news site has such biased and opinionated articles. It's very unprofessional. And Movieline makes it seem like everyone else shares their opinions. "Do YOU really want an Entourage movie?" Well to answer your question Movieline, yes, I do want an Entourage movie. It's one of the best shows on TV and I like millions of others, yes millions Julie, love watching Vince and the gang. If you don't understand the shows humor than it's just not for you. Watching Entourage is like watching Dazed and Confused, Dinner or American Graffiti. Whenever you watch it you feel like your hanging out with old friends. It's a great feeling and I'm sorry that you feel the need to over simplify the shows general plot because you just can't appreciate it Julie. Well, your loss. Maybe try Sex and the City. That might be more your speed.
I have watched every episode of Entourage to date, and I will likely watch every one this season--albeit with shame. The singular source of appeal of the program, for me, is that it's shiny.
It's eye-opening (and more than a little depressing) that there is a demographic that equates the quality of characterization and dialogue on the show with that of "coming-of-age" classics such as Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti. (I can't speak as to what I presume is the final chapter in a trilogy about meals, as I haven't seen any of them.) But everyone's entitled to his or her own opinion, including the author of this post.
New Rule: You can't complain about a show that you admit to watching EVERY SINGLE EPISODE OF. I love it when people go "oh yeah, I watch the show...... it sucks but I watch EVERY SEASON? I mean what are you? A masochist ? I watched Weeds for the 1st two seasons and then it got to a point where it became so ridiculous that I could stand it no longer. Ya know what I did? I stopped watching it! I know, I know, what was I thinking? If I were you I'd still be watching. I don't know why I'd still be watching it, but I'd still be there every week. I guess maybe if was confined to a small room with no exits for a period of years than maybe there might be some sort of justification. But anything short of that I just don't get.
P.S. I hate the term "coming of age." It's so condescending!
"Entourage" is great TV. Writing, directing, casting and locations.
Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold is genius. For 7, now 8 seasons.
And how many Emmys?
Much like "Sex in the City" was every females fantasy,
"Entourage" is ever males.
As to movies? Watching on HBO is one thing, going to a theatre...
I would have stopped watching if it had stopped being shiny. Entourage has kept its end of the bargain; I am therefore duty bound to have sat through every 30-minute segment of "Something's About to Happen...In the Next Episode, Not This One", knowing full well that I would feel dirty afterwards.
P.S. - I hate the term "New Rule". It's slightly presumptuous.
"Party Down" Movie! Make it!
At the risk of shattering your world view and leaving you crying like a baby, Movieline was designed as an opinionated and occasionally snarky website, much like the fantastic magazine it was inspired by. I'm guessing you've never heard of the A.V. Club or any other entertainment site that contradicts your viewpoint of life.
How incredibly hypocritical for you to state that Julie doesn't get the "humor" of a show you like (and for the record, I've never seen "Entourage", so I have no opinion of it good or bad, other than that I've never even been slightly interested in watching it) when you obviously don't get the humor of a website that prides itself on being opinionated and honest. May I respectfully suggest that if you think Movieline is "unprofessional", you stick to those wonderfully professional sites you enjoy so much and leave those who enjoy opinions alone?
Thank you.
You have shattered my world view. And no sir, you may not "respectfully request" anything! I demand to to be treated like a repugnant parasite and if you don't like it, well, then complement me all you want! 😉
You are a very pretty parasite. I like what you've done with your hair.
Four Emmys. Three for Jeremy Piven as Outstanding Supporting Actor. One for Outstanding Sound Mixing. Not that that means anything, but the show isn't the second coming of M*A*S*H or Hill Street Blues.
And Entourage is not every male's fantasy, unless you mean that having sex with the short guy would be a fantasy come true. He's major cute.
I agree why bother writing an article if you so obviously aren't a fan of the show. I want a movie, actually I want 3 more seasons!!! Oh and by the way Friday night lights was already a movie you know before the show...Billy bob Thornton anyone?
@AS - You realize "Entourage" IS "Sex In The City" right?
Oh thank you I love the mask!
Entourage is a really good HBO series. It works because it's 30 minutes long, and on a premium cable channel. The subject matter, style and tone are best suited to cable. But if you alter the form, even just editing it as a syndicated strip, it fairly falls apart. (See SATC and Curb as other examples.)
It wouldn't work as a movie because the characters can't stand the harsh light of long-form scrutiny. At its best, Entourage is a satire of the Hollywood system -- but the satire isn't really satire as much as it's a retelling of reality. How are they going to make Entourage seem relevant as a film when we've already seen The Player, Network and Wag the Dog?
Nah, he's just an follower of Apostle Bill (oops, that's right, no religion allowed). Stuff your New Rules!!!
Stop the insanity! Does every show that's ending its run have to put out the "let's make a film" teaser? It won't happen because no one will be writing a script. Where's that Soprano's movie?
If the story line of the final season still leaves us wondering what happens to theses characters we all fell in love with, then YES, Make a movie. Close the book on the Entourage chapter. But if you are going to make a movie that feels like a two hour version of the show, Dont DO IT! You dont wan to ruin the legacy of the show with a underdeveloped movie/script just to make money. Hints "Sex in the City" Horrible ending to a good series.
I absolutely want to see an Entourage movie. It has been such a great show for such a long time and I will take anything to extend my enjoyment of the show! However, I do agree that it has to be a great script because it is not worth ruining such a great franchise with a mediocre movie.
