VIDEO: Jason Statham Gets Grittier in Trailer for Direct-to-DVD Blitz
Jason Statham's new British action thriller Blitz may go straight to DVD in the U.S., but why, girls, why? It has all of these cineplex treats: Jason Statham's stathamminess, Paddy Considine as Statham's openly gay partner, and enough grumbled quips to appease most fans of the honorable Jean-Claude Van Damme. Adapted from Ken Bruen's novel by Moon scribe Nathan Parker, Blitz goes for grit and comes up with grumbles. I think we can all respect that.
First things first: voiceover. Works my soul into a joy frenzy every time, and makes me think of (what else) the trailer for Rent-a-Cop. Secondly, I guess Jason Statham's arsenal has a one-liner surplus at the moment! Are we ears deceiving me or did I hear him say, "So it's not the black kid from Diff'rent Strokes?" That was Considine's cue to deadpan, "Right, but it could still be Conrad Bain." More comedy please!
Here's the official description:
The south-east London police squad are suffering collective burnout: with tragic deaths, excessive habits, uncontrollable anger and the wrong kind of friendships, the team never had it so bad. When a serial killer takes his show on the road, things get progressively worse. Nicknamed 'The Blitz,' a vicious murderer is aiming for tabloid glory by killing cops. Harold Dunphy, Ace crime reporter, thinks he's on to the story of the decade, and the police have all the incentive they need to catch their criminal - before they get caught first!
OK, I was pretty sold until " -- before they get caught first!" What is this, the description of a murder-mystery board game? Is this 13 Dead End Drive: The Movie? Wouldn't be surprised.

I'm guessing the UK police sponsored this film to convince the public they need to be armed, if only to keep up with the young, anarchist Facebook generation. YO DERE COPPAH!
