Mel Gibson's Brother Reacts: 'That Isn't Mel'

Just when you thought you'd never think about Oksana Grigorieva's damning tapes of Mel Gibson's pyromaniacal requests for oral sex again, the Braveheart star's brother is here to echo Jodie Foster and Whoopi Goldberg: Mel's not a racist, y'all! He's not even racist. Or aggressive. Or a litterer. Here, let's allow Andrew Gibson to explain it all.

According to Andrew Gibson, whose quotes appear in Australia's The Mercury, the Mel we think we know is -- well, not that Mel.

Mr Gibson said the entire Gibson clan did not believe alleged taped conversations of Mel, 55, using abusive, homophobic and racist language were really him.

"When I heard them I just thought, 'That isn't Mel.' He has never said anything abusive, aggressive or racist in his life," Mr Gibson said.

While he admitted his brother had made homophobic quotes during a 1991 interview, an openly gay Mr Gibson said his brother's comments were not meant to cause any offence and that when he came out to family and friends more than two decades ago, Mel had been supportive.

"He never meant to upset anyone. I have never once heard anything anti-gay come out of his mouth," Mr Gibson said.

I understand defending your family. I even understand trying to improve a relative's public image when he doesn't deserve it. But it's pretty ridiculous that Andrew Gibson, who heard the horrible rant with his own ears, can't even muster up the gall to say, "What he said was awful. It was embarrassing" before then claiming Mel didn't mean any harm. On the other hand, it's difficult not to take a brother's point of view seriously. I don't know. I wish someone close to Mel could just say, "Yes, it was offensive," and acknowledge the severity of a crack like, "You look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers, it will be your fault." Disappointing, Drew!

Mel's no madman [The Mercury]

Civil person - even considered cultured by his immediate family - but ADD alcohol to the mix and then you can expect a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reaction - that is nothing out of the ordinary - some people are happy drunks - some people are angry and vindictive drunks!!!

People with mental illness behave out of character all the time. Mel Gibson suffers from severe bipolar disorder. He is also an alcoholic.
It's really not that complicated. He could be a wonderful guy 99 percent of the time for all any of us knows. All the public pillorying of this guy indicates is that the general public are grossly ignorant about mental illness and judgmental of those who suffer from it.

  • Andrew says:

I suffer from bipolar disorder. I would wager $1,000,000,000 that mine is much more severe than Mr. Gibson's. I have never spewed out hateful racism or punched any women in the face.
Gibson MIGHT be bipolar, but he's also a racist and woman beater. One has nothing to do with the other. And to flat out say, "Oh he's not at fault because he's crazy." Is offensive to ME and the millions of my brethren who manage to make it to tomorrow despite our illness.
Please do not speak for the mentally ill, because you clearly are not one of us, and do not understand what we go through. We can speak for ourselves and certainly do not need some ignorant white knight riding to our rescue by insulting the shit out of us.
    Thanks!

Regardless, no matter who comes to Mel Gibson’s defense—his brother, Jodie Foster, whatever short-sighted gay he can bribe for support—the evidence that he is raging maniac is too overwhelming to deny. If a person does not make a racist, homophobic, sexist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise belligerent comment to you personally, that does not necessarily mean he or she is a still a worthwhile person. One can rely on lived experience, or one can open their eyes to reality. Mel Gibson’s nuts.

For starters, commenter Andrew you can't go around calling Mel a woman beater, that makes you just as much of an A-hole. Oksana dropped her domestic voilence case when her ex body guard revealed that she'd planned a domestic voilence allegation before it had 'alledgedly' taken place. I also find it amusing that whilst she had all this time and money on her hands to tape the man, she couldn't take a single photo of her facial injuries, or provide legal documentation from her dentist etc.
Andrew's come out to defend his brother, plain and simple. Wouldn't you defend your sibling? Don't try and convince people what a bad person Mel is. Just accept that maybe you don't actually know a thing about the man. Idiots.

I'm a nice guy too, but I can't say I've never said anything abusive, aggressive or racist in my life.
    And Mel is an alcoholic.

  • Roy says:

Ha! You don't know a damn thing about me or my life, and you don't know anything about Mel Gibson. I'm glad to hear you never punched anyone in the face. Can you prove to me that Gibson has? Can you provide an answer as to why the domestic violence charge was dropped? The fact that you have bipolar does not make you an expert. People with the condition behave in ways that are out of character ALL THE TIME. They can be grandiose, they can be very aggressive, they will often breach taboos. Gibson was clearly manic and out of control in those audio recordings. Like anyone in the grips of a manic episode he was deserving of sympathy and PRIVACY and yet received neither.
Mel Gibson might be a terrible person. He might be a wonderful guy. Those tapes, and the incident on PCH, can tell us neither. If the alternative to being a heartless, judgmental douchebag is to be perceived as a 'white knight', then I for one say saddle up.

Sorry y'all. I'm a huge Mel fan so there will be no bashing with my comments.
When all is said and done, where is the evidence? I mean the true evidence that Mel committed assault on Oksana? There is none. That is why she dropped the charges. As human beings, we all are guilty of wrong doings and our own demons. The media is blowing Mel's situation out of proportion due to his status in Hollywood. The media doesn't mention all the worthy things he has done during his career or, better yet, recently. It seems that when someone in Hollywood gets into a bind, the media is all over it ready to bash a celebrities name all over the cover of magazines because that is what sells. No one really knows what happened between Mel and Oksana, except for the party themselves. However, if the tapes are authentic (which I doubt) and have not been dubbed in any way, Oksana must have pushed Mel to his breaking point. But just by the sound of it, she is using her power (the child) to get money out Mel, which I think is a horrible thing to do and would give any parent a cause to blow a fuse or two. This was a personal matter that she made public. If any fingers should be pointing, they should be pointing at Oksama for pulling such a nasty maneuver. Why would she sell the tapes? To make money! Right? I'm with Mel on this one.
I have family members that are bipolar, and I have never heard nor seen them have a total meltdown. I say leave Mel alone and give him some space and peace of mind so that he can focus on more important things, work and family.
