Talkback: Who Should Sing the Next James Bond Theme Song?
Composer David Arnold this week reaffirmed his interest in having Amy Winehouse contribute the vocals to the next James Bond theme song, which Arnold will assist in writing for Sam Mendes's untitled 007 film set to shoot this fall. It's a natural inclination considering the singer's vintage '60s style and tone (assuming you want to go vintage; there's always the Duran Duran or Chris Cornell route, I guess), but then there's that minor problem of Winehouse being unshakably strung out on booze and/or drugs. Plan B might be in order. That's where you come in.
Arnold hastens to add in his comments to Anne Thompson that he has not yet read the Bond 23 script, which will go a long way toward influencing the theme song and thus its most compatible singer. It's never too soon, however, to get a short list in front of the man. The conventional wisdom points to Winehouse's compatriot chanteuses Adele or (less likely) Lily Allen, with Beyoncé and even Lady Gaga apparently in the running from the American side.
But screw conventional wisdom -- if any and every vocalist were on the table, who would you want to take it on? Here are my dream finalists, ranging from "Facebook-petition ready" to "Things you only hear in Heaven":
· Neko Case
· Chrissie Hynde
· Morrissey
· Thom Yorke (screw it, just turn the entire theme song over to Radiohead)
· Dionne Warwick (obviously)
Ahem. Your turn!

Comments
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings...
Portishead.
See: "All Mine" which sounds like it was written for a James Bond film that never existed.
Michael Buble
Second vote for Sharon Jones.
Or bring back Shirley Bassey to give it true 007 style
Adele, hands down. Bring back the classic Bond!!
You already name checked Adele who would be a much better fit than Winehouse (and certainly more fitting with their picking of current stars) but thank you for suggesting Neko Case. It would be a strange choice to be sure but an interesting one.
For that matter I would love to hear what a Morrissey theme song would song like too.
I would add Beth Orton too. I love her voice.
Any combination of two:
Beck, Thom Yorke, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga (annoys me, but you can't deny the girl can sing)
Another vote for Sharon Jones.
I hate to say this, given the caliber of talent, but if you want someone new, Xenia Martinez from The Voice. She's got a great sound that matches the Bond style.
Florence and the Machine!
the band yes

Kanye. And he could sample five previous Bond songs.
(I suggest this in jest, but now that I think about it...)
I would suggest Alison Moyet, Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, or the Pet Shop Boys.
I agree with NP on Portishead, I always thought 'Sour Times' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niIcxMuORco) sounded like the best Bond theme never recorded.
My ideal choice would be PULP though, I can't imagine anyone doing it better.
How about a band who actually did a great James Bond theme before? Like Duran Duran.
YES! This. Well, after Neko Case.
It's too bad Danny Boyle's not directing, because then we could ensure an Underworld song for James Bond.
Or the Jai Ho guy. But would prefer Underworld.
Would also like to throw Daft Punk into the equation, given how their score was probably the greatest score of last year, and yes I'm including the Facebook movie.
Why Sade or Swing Out Sister have never been asked is beyond me. In both cases, the band's music is screaming to be Bond-ed.
3 options:
1. Adele (most natural choice, really)
2. Gin Wigmore (another British singer who is overlooked)
3. Janelle Monae - a fantastic singer who also has a great vintage/retro image
Whatever genre or style of music you would want for Mr. Bond, my money says ADAM LAMBERT would knock it out of the park!
Yesssss.
Janelle would be an awesome choice.
Cee-Lo Green
Tori Amos. Aimee Mann. Annie Lennox.
Christine Aguilerra hasn't done it yet,has she? If not I'd like to hear her totally kill a new Bond theme song.
