Is the Forbes List of Highest Paid Actresses in Hollywood Depressing?

Forbes compiled a (perhaps inexact) list of the highest paid women in Hollywood, and oh my gosh it's bleak! Oh my gosh! Specifically, the list highlights actresses who earned the most money from May, 2010 to May, 2011, which means plenty of tween starlets and longtime, fast-staling breadwinners make the grade. Gawk with us.

1. Angelina Jolie, $30 million

1. Sarah Jessica Parker, $30 million

3. Jennifer Aniston, $28 million

3. Reese Witherspoon, $28 million

5. Julia Roberts, $20 million

5. Kristen Stewart, $20 million

7. Katherine Heigl, $19 million

8. Cameron Diaz, $18 million

9. Sandra Bullock, $15 million

10. Meryl Streep, $10 million

First, the good news: You'll be delighted (or shocked) to learn that half of these women are Oscar-winners. Besides Streep, they're not exactly the worthiest Oscar winners ever -- with Bullock in particular giving the softest Best Actress performance of the past 50 years -- but they're more respectable than most. Far as I'm concerned, Reese Witherspoon deserves every bit of her paychecks, though she should keep depositing them in Tracy Flick and Vanessa Lutz's saving accounts.

And now, the rancor: Oh, Sarah Jessica Parker. You were once a hard-busking actress punching through the '90s with so-so roles and grade-A defiance, and now you are... a clotheshanger in a film series that ruins all the good of its HBO beginnings. Oh, you. Oh, us. Cameron Diaz, your definitive film is still Charlie's Angels, which is a misfortune that speaks for itself. So, boo. As far as omissions on the list go, the untouchable Helen Mirren worked her ass off last year, and where is she? Glowering in the $5 mil range with Tom Felton and the surlier Michalka? Plenty of you Black Swan enablers will wonder why Natalie Portman isn't here, and I will allow you that delusion. I'm sad not to see Marion Cotillard either, but I'm mostly holding out hope for Jennifer Lawrence and Mia Wasikowska to crack the list in coming years.

So, who's missing? Who's not? And who's worried?

Only 3 non-moms on the list... Who says you can't have it all?

  • Megan says:

So basically here's the qualifications for being a high-paid actress:
1)You were in at least 30 shitty rom-coms
2)You are a domestic partner to Brad Pitt and/or you were in at least 30 shitty spy/action thrillers
3)You are currently in a series of seriously-shitty movies based off of seriously-shitty books
    4)You are Meryl Streep
Wow. Talk about "one of these things is not like the other."

  • Metalligretch says:

    Yes. Very.

  • SittingPat says:

Seems Megan has said it all, except to say, 3a. You are now or once were been labeled, "America's Sweetheart."

I'm actually cool with this list, even if in a perfect world Meryl Streep would be number one. Yes, Kristen Stewart is in a series of movies that I personally am not interested in watching, but then again, I'm not the target audience. And while I am not a fan of "Sex in the City" either, I'm extremely glad that Sarah found success after "Square Pegs". I am a little disappointed in the dig against Sandra Bullock though. While the movie was pretty lame, I thought Sandra did a fantastic job. In fact, after I finally watched it (my best friend bought the DVD for me as a Christmas present, so I felt obligated), I thought, "Okay, now I understand why she won the Oscar." Although I do have to add, how come Meryl Streep keeps getting nominated pretty much every year, yet never wins anymore? Since when did being the best working actress alive mean you're dismissed for giving yet another amazing performance?

  • Louis Virtel says:

Very much concur on the Meryl point (though, really, the losing performance of hers that most deserved the win, in The Devil Wears Prada, was beaten out by Helen Mirren, who arguably deserved the victory. Meryl will win two more Oscars in her lifetime though, trust me.) Sandra was very good in The Blind Side, though it was certainly the fourth-best performance (at most) in the category that year. Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, and Helen Mirren all towered over her. Gabourey Sidibe's mouth-crunch acting I can do without, however.

Well, SJP is a thoroughbred. Those are expensive.

  • 2+2=5 says:

loved Sarah Jessica Parker in War Horse trailer.

  • Remy says:

I don’t think this is a bad list at all, actually. These actresses may not have earned their salaries for the world’s most brilliant movies in the specified timeframe, but all of them (yes, even Sarah Jessica Parker and Katherine Heigl) are very talented. I think the male list, if Forbes makes one, will be much worse.

  • blizzard bound says:

In my fantasy world, people like Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett would be on this list.
