Friday Box Office: Transformers Continues Assault, Larry Crowne Flops

All hail Megatron! While Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned "just" $33.5 million on Friday night -- 15 percent behind what Revenge of the Fallen grabbed on its first Friday in 2009 -- the Michael Bay-directed explosion orgy is on track to bank $185 million through its first seven days. That might be disappointing, until you consider the foreign grosses, which are expected to top $200 million over the same timeframe. The outlook isn't as rosy for Larry Crowne: the film crashed its moped into fourth place on the chart, and won't top $20 million for the weekend. Your Friday box office is here.

1. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON: $33.5 million ($98.2 million)

2. CARS 2: $7.7 million ($98.6 million)

3. BAD TEACHER: $4.3 million ($49.7 million)

4. LARRY CROWNE: $4.1 million (new)

5. MONTE CARLO: $3 million (new)

Finally no more movies starring horse face herself.

  • The WInchester says:

Larry Crowne failed because if you've been to see a movie in the past four months where things aren't animated and/or based on a comic book, you saw the preview more times than you care to remember, and which basically showed the entire movie.
Hindsight hint to the marketers: More Takei, less Train.

  • Steven says:

You mean Julia Roberts? I bet millioins of ppl think she is beautiful. Her ex...Lyle Lovit, was pretty "horse faced" but ppl think he's attractive too. What do you look like? Are you cute?

  • Dano says:

Just goes to show you. Its all trash in show land..

  • Tommy Marx says:

Comments like yours are always irritating for two reasons.
    1. Are you in the third grade? Putting down someone because of how he or she looks is the most immature and asinine thing I can think of. What's next? Are you going to state definitively that she has cooties?
    2. If you do not like an actress, this is going to sound like an unbelievably complicated suggestion, but here goes anyway. Don't see her movies.
Now go stand in the corner and think about how you behaved, young lady.

  • The Cantankerist says:

I reckon LC faced an uphill battle largely because Hanks/Roberts seems like a mismatch. The "traditional" conservative/older moviegoer knows the classic two-hander pairings: Hanks/Ryan, Roberts/Gere. Roberts bounces well off an easy sexuality, which is not Hanks now (if it ever was), and the prospect of the two of them flirting is like "Hey! Come watch your wacky uncle hit on your sister!" - hmm, no thanks, I'll pass.

People who make comments like that are the bitter jealous ones

  • Pete says:

Didnt really crash. Only crashed if you look at the insane numbers of #1. Compared to the rest it did alright.

  • j'accuse! says:

I don't know if you plan on coming back to this comment or not, but you really, truly made my afternoon with that, "Hey! Come watch your wacky uncle hit on your sister!"
