What Other Disney Rides Should Be Made Into Features?
As reported on Wednesday night, Disney is moving full-steam ahead on a film adaptation of the famed Matterhorn ride at Disneyland. Tentatively called The Hill, the new project will focus on five young adventurers who wind up tangling with some fairly upset Yetis atop a large mountain. Spooky, scary, etc. Instead of getting on your soapbox to complain about yet another Disney ride being co-opted for big screen doubloons, though, why not embrace the obvious and help Movieline suggest some other Disney rides that should become movies.
This clearly isn't a fading phenomenon: Disney is developing Magic Kingdom (with Jon Favreau); there's a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea project (actually a Jules Verne novel, but also a ride) is in the works with David Fincher attached; and -- judging from the grosses of number four -- another Pirates of the Caribbean film seems likely. This is to say nothing of Guillermo del Toro's attempt at reigniting the Haunted Mansion franchise, something which may have fallen by the wayside with all the other films on his table.
What other rides warrant screen recognition? How about these (with some Movieline-approved pitches):
Monorail: The Movie: Part Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, part Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Monorail would follow a madman who takes hostages at Disney, and the lengths that a hostage negotiator (Mickey Mouse) must go to talk him down. Jeremy Renner stars; Brett Ratner directs.
Space Mountain: The Rock, Vin Diesel and Shaquille O'Neal compete to see which man can get to the top of the highest mountain on Mars first. Unexpected friendships are forged when Martians attack.
Hall of Presidents: Five deceased ex-presidents return from the grave as zombies and start to wreak havoc on politicians around Washington, D.C. Only a young college student (Shia LaBeouf) has the know-how to stop them from killing the current president (Jamie Foxx).
And so on! What say you, dear Movieline readers? Which Disney rides should be future Disney films?
