Marvel Schedules Thor 2 For Summer 2013 Release Without Kenneth Branagh

Big news for Thor fans: Marvel Studios is committing to a sequel for the hammer-carrying superhero due in theaters summer 2013. While Chris Hemsworth will return as the title character, director Kenneth Branagh will not be overseeing the new production.

Branagh, who spoke to Movieline this May, will likely stay on the project in some producer capacity. Deadline reports that his decision to not helm the sequel was "mutual and amicable" and that Disney will release the superhero sequel on July 26, 2013.

Hemsworth will next be seen opposite Kristen Stewart in Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman.

DUMB! Branagh was the true MVP of that movie. It wasn't like it had a great script or fantastic characters. Branagh's direction made what could've been a very pedestrian movie into an enjoyable one. Maybe he sees the future, one where a friggin' Marvel superhero movie gets released weekly and he doesn't want to be the guy making the next Green Lantern.

You're HIGH.... There was absolutely nothing wrong with the "concept" of the Green Lantern Movie, and the cast was enjoyable. Green Lanterns issues... The Director "SUCKED"... he could have taken the reigns and helped it to become one of the top DC Hero flicks made.... I just hope if they prepare a sequel that they put some serious thought into the script and Director so they can ensure Ryan Reynolds stays!! I thought he did a super Hal!!! Was THOR better... yes, but(better script and better director)!!! I've got practically no Directing experience, and I GUARANTEE you I could have made Green Lantern better!!!!

  • Trace says:

Quite frankly, neither of them were all that great, but directing wasn't a real problem with either of those movies.

  • Chasmosaur says:

Hopefully, Branagh stays on in a very active producing role. Because his vision - i.e. - Thor as Shakespearian - is what made the movie so wonderful.
