Tom Hanks Alludes to Toy Story 4 in Mumbly, Hanksian Way

toystory3_120.jpgIn a BBC interview for his Larry Crowne press tour, Tom Hanks responded to a question about the possibility of a Toy Story 4 with the following mumblecore prose: "I think there will be, yeah. Yeah, yeah, they're working on it now. There you go." Nervous yet? Toy Story 3 concluded perfectly; a third sequel feels like a recipe for disaster, a sure way to turn the whole series into a Punchline. Stand clear, Sally Field. [AICN]

I dunno about that, movies always sort of badly walk a fine line between being a continuing franchise and being the final word on a story, and they usually get sequels either way. For instance, in the Dark Knight and Spider-man 3, killing off the Venom and Two-Face characters as soon as they are introduced, trying to make Batman and Spider-man into one-shot wonders rather than immortal, coming back in new comic books month after month for all time. Just because writers and directors seem intent on crippling a franchise's potential sequels faster than they can set them up, or similarly giving a series a solid sense of closure like in Toy Story 3, it seems franchises continue either way if there is reason to believe it will make money and amuse people, and whether a movie sets up the continuation well or not does not seem to be a reliable indicator of its follow up's profitability or entertainment value.

I wouldn't have minded if the series ended with 1 or 2. Besides, I thought they said the shorts are enough.

I'm surprised a studio rep. hasn't popped up to squash this one. Could have sworn last week they were saying the "shorts" would be enough to satisfy the fans, since TS3 ended on a perfect note. Perhaps they know people are really only going to see Cars 2 to watch the short and the new trailer for Brave.
