Idris Elba Cast As Lead in Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim; What Does This Mean for Django Unchained?

idriselba-300.jpgBeloved former Wire star Idris Elba has been circling many major Hollywood project in recent months, and it looks like he finally bagged one. Deadline reports that Elba -- last seen onscreen as Heimdall in Thor -- has landed the lead role opposite Charlie Hunnam in Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim. Fabulous! But what does this mean for Django Unchained?

You'll recall that Elba was on the short list of names rumored for the lead role in Quentin Tarantino's next film, alongside Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and Chris Tucker. With Smith apparently having passed, and Elba nabbing Rim, that leaves just Tucker and Foxx standing. Per Deadline's Mike Fleming, Foxx could get the coveted role, but nothing is finalized as of yet.

As for Pacific Rim, Elba will star as Sensi -- a role originally earmarked for Tom Cruse -- part of a group of human tasked to stopping an alien threat from destroying the world. Oh, is that all?
