Friday Box Office: Lantern Sees Green

A barrel of bile and backlog of blockbusters didn't keep America from having a go at Green Lantern on Friday, resulting in a healthy (if not astounding) opening day tally. Jim Carrey delivered reasonably as well, while Super 8 tapered off by half in its quest for week-two lucre. Let's check out the numbers; your Friday Box Office is here.

1. GREEN LANTERN: $22 million (new)

2. MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS: $7 million (new)

3. SUPER 8: $5.8 million ($71.5 million)

4. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: $3.3 million ($129 million)

5. THE HANGOVER PART II: $3 million ($233 million)

If there's a lesson to be learned this summer, it's that audiences want their comic book movies to partially take place on Prog Rock album covers from the 70s.

How does this compare to the day 1 totals for other comic blockbusters of the last few years?

  • Paullett says:

Funny how the Green Lantern who is an American Comic Book Character just happens to actually be Canadian...lol

And 3D lives to inflate box-office numbers another day.

I saw Lantern and Super 8 back to back last night, and while Super 8 was much better, Lantern wasn't bad. Given the reviews, I was expecting GL to be horrible, but it's the kind of movie that comic book fans will enjoy, though people who aren't into the genre won't think much of it. Reynolds is very good in the lead, the film has a decent amount of humor, and the CGI is pretty good. It drags in the middle, and there is no chemistry between Reynolds and Lively, but it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Thank you for the snark free review. I'm not sold on the movie, but I appreciate an honest opinion.

I was a bit dissapointed by the Green Lantern. This film could´ve used a lot more action. The biggest positive of this typical summer comic book movie was Sinestro played by Mark Strong. He was great and for me he pretty much saved the movie.
