On His 40th Birthday, A Remembrance of Tupac Shakur's Film Career
Bullet (1996)
Unfortunately, the historic meeting of Tupac and Mickey Rourke didn't result in a film for the ages, but a rather forgettable thriller in which Shakur plays villainous foil to Rourke's titular ex-con hero, Bullet. The film was released posthumously a month after Shakur's death.
Gridlock'd (1997)
Greater praise was given to Vondie Curtis-Hall's directorial debut Gridlock'd, a crime comedy that ingeniously paired Shakur with Tim Roth as Spoon and Stretch, respectively, two addict friends trying to get sober after a friend's overdose.
Gang Related (1997)
Shakur's last film performance, also released posthumously, came opposite Jim Belushi in the neo-noir Gang Related, about two dirty cops who become entangled in an increasingly messy spiral of corruption. Watch Shakur describe his art, acting, troubles, and career in an interview for the film.
And as a bonus, Tupac's very first film appearance, as part of Digital Underground's cameo in 1991's Nothing But Trouble:
According to reports, Shakur is due for the biopic treatment, courtesy of Antoine Fuqua, and mother Afeni is shepherding a script he wrote to the big screen, so he may yet continue his legacy from the great beyond. Leave your own favorite Tupac film moments in the comments below.
