Happy 48th Birthday, Johnny Depp! What's His Finest Onscreen Moment?

It is a very special Thursday here at Movieline HQ. Not just because it's Super 8 Eve, but because we have some birthdays to celebrate. Get out the sheet cake! Like the now-30-year-old Natalie Portman, star Johnny Depp -- one of the finest actors of our generation -- has a birthday on June 9. The Oscar nominee turns 48 today, and that means it's time to look back on some of his best onscreen work. What's your favorite Depp performance? Let's discuss ahead.

There are so many great ones to choose from -- Benny & Joon, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, the original Pirates of the Caribbean, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to name five -- for the birthday boy, and plenty of risks, too. Like, singing in Sweeney Todd.

Not bad, Johnny! But leave the "Happy Birthday" harmonies to your friendly Movieline editors. What's your favorite Depp big screen moment? Where do you hope he goes as an actor as he heads into his 50s? Wish him happy birthday and discuss your favorite Depp performances below.

    Blow was pretty sweet.

When Freddy Krueger pulled him into the bed and killed him.

  • Lisa says:

I love all of his unique role choices, but some of my favorites were Ichabod Crane in Sleep Hollow, J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland, and Mort Rainey in Secret Window. I was particularly happy with Secret Window since so few of Stephen King's stories end up as decent movies. Happy birthday to Johnny!

God, it's hard as hell to pick! I guess if I had 1 to choose, it would be...ANYTHING he worked with Tim Burton on!

Happy Birthday Johnny! I love you!Wishes from Romania! I think the best performance was when he sang in Sweeney Todd!

  • CiscoMan says:

I wouldn't say it's my favorite of his performances, but I'd like to give some love to Donnie Brasco. Depp is largely and deservedly celebrated for his quirkiness, but he did play Donnie straight down the middle (relatively speaking) and nail it.
