What Accent is Don Cheadle Trying to Affect in New Trailer for The Guard?

The Guard has screened to very strong reviews at film festivals from Sundance to Berlin to Tribeca, and the brand new trailer for the film makes it look like the type of funny and irreverent import that would fit well on your DVD shelf in between Hot Fuzz and In Bruges. The only problem: what kind of accent is Oscar nominee Don Cheadle attempting here? Your guesses are welcome ahead!

Funny stuff, right? But that accent! It's seems to drift in and out like Joe Pesci's Chi-caw-go accent in Casino. Is it supposed to be Southern? Ivy League? It's not New York, but then Cheadle's character talks about summers in the Hamptons -- so, maybe? The possibilities are endless.

The Guard opens in New York and Los Angeles on July 29. Head over to Apple to watch the trailer in HD.

OK, bad accent, but I laughed at the line, "I thought black people couldn't ski. Or is that swimming?" I remember hearing somewhere that black people couldn't swim; that was news to me and my friends.

  • Bryan says:

The accent obviously comes from all the time he's spent in Virginia!
Seriously, though, I'd go see this if both he and Brendan Gleeson both sounded LIKE Joe Pesci!

  • Ann Marie says:

If he's suppose to have spent time in the Hamptons, the accent possibilities are indeed endless.

"What Accent is Don Cheadle Trying to Affect" Christopher was is with the question headline? It is sophomoric for someone like you do focus on that. Are you having a bad day.
Don Cheadle is a good actor who seems to do an accent in every other movie he does. But your focus is just crazy.

  • Christopher Rosen says:

He's doing them all in this movie, apparently.
