Which Celebrity Chef Did Melissa McCarthy Base Her Bridesmaids Character On?
If you thought that Melissa McCarthy's scene-stealing performance in Paul Feig's Bridesmaids (read Stephanie Zacharek's review here) seemed familiar, there's a reason for that. In an interview with Conan O'Brien, the Mike & Molly lead revealed that she based her zany character on one of the Food Network's celebrity chefs. Can you guess which one?
If you guessed Guy Fieri, you are correct. Allow Melissa to explain her onscreen motivation.
"Really, when I first read [the Bridesmaids script], the first person that I thought of was Guy Fieri from the Food Network. I wanted to do the shirt, the Kangol. Every scene I would have my glasses on the back of my head."
But director Paul Feig had to rein her in.
"I tried for a long time to convince them to let me wear short, white, spiky hair, and they were like, 'You can't actually be Guy Fieri.' Cut it off at some point!"
If you still don't understand why any Hollywood actress would willingly base a character on Guy Fieri's chains and frosted tips, watch the entire Conan confession below.
