Weekend Receipts: Thor Thumps Bridesmaids, Priest Finds Audiences Agnostic
It was a super second weekend for Thor as it held on to the top spot and declined a relatively slim -47% (contrast that with the -62% tumble that Fast Five took on its second weekend). But the good news wasn't confined to first, as the poopin' dames of Bridesmaids notched a strong debut at second place. But pity the clergy as Priest could only muster a fourth place bow. Your weekend receipts are here.
1. Thor
Gross: $34,500,000 ($119,252,000)
Screens: 3,963 (PSA: $8,706)
Weeks: 2 (change: -47.5%)
If you're a comic dork like me, you might've been on the look out for a few Easter eggs throughout the movie, little shoutouts to the original comic book. And evidently Odin's treasure room was the place to sharpen your vision, with all sorts of goodies like the Warlock's Eye and the Infinity Gauntlet.
2. Bridesmaids
Gross: $24,409,000 (new)
Screens: 2,918 (PSA: $8,365)
Weeks: 1
It's a hilarious comedy, but it had some oddly dramatic patches that I found surprising and not handled as deftly as the comedy. The movie asked Kristin Wiig to take on some heavy moments on her shoulders and I just don't think she had the heft to carry it. But, hey! I'm still laughing at the dress fitting scene.
3. Fast Five
Gross: $19,534,000 ($168,780,000)
Screens: 3,793 (PSA: $5,150)
Weeks: 3 (change:-39.8%)
Fast Five is now the highest grossing entry in the series, but where do the titles go on from here? Speedy Six? Super-Fast Seven? Alacritous Eight?
4. Priest
Gross: $14,500,000 (new)
Screens: 2,864 (PSA: $5,063)
Weeks: 1
So when Paul Bettany and director Scott Charles Stewart looked at their previous collaboration Legion and saw how widely reviled it was and saw its so-so box office take, were they like, "Screw it, we're doubling down! Let's do another religion-themed horror flick!"
5. Rio
Gross: $8,000,000 ($124,968,000)
Screens: 2,929 (PSA: $2,731)
Weeks: 5 (change: -5.9%)
Holy God, but this movie has been around for more than a month and I have nothing else to say about it. They're birds! They fall in love! George Lopez is in it for some reason! Take it away, take it away from me!

Fast Five sequel: Swift Six.
Also, how did Thor "Thump" Bridesmaids? The per screen average for both films is nearly identical, and Bridesmaids cost 80% less to make than Thor.
Alliteration is fun!
