What Movie is the Most Profitable of 2011 Thus Far?

With the summer box office ready to heat up on Friday (as Universal's awesome marketing campaign for Fast Five reminds everyone, this year "summer starts early"), what better time to look back on the previous three months of the year to assess just which films hit their financial mark. So, what 2011 release has been the most profitable thus far? Hint: It isn't Hop, Rango, Battle: Los Angeles or Rio.

It's Insidious! The FilmDistrict release has grossed over $44 million domestically and is on track for $80 or $90 million worldwide.

That might not sound like a huge windfall, until you consider that Paranormal Activity producers Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider made the James Wan-directed film for $1.5 million. What does this mean? Well, you can probably expect to see Insidious 2: Really Insidious in theaters sometime before 2013.
