Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Greengrass May Meet Travis McGee, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

LeonardoDiCaprio225.jpgAlso in this Tuesday edition of The Broadsheet: World War Z gives Brad Pitt an onscreen wife... Mindy Kaling takes part in Five Year Engagement... American Reunion sets a date... and more ahead.

· Less than a month after Universal pulled financing from Paul Greengrass' Martin Luther King Jr. assassination film Memphis, the director has landed on his feet. Not only will he push Memphis back a year with the hopes of finalizing some more financing in the coming months, but he'll also direct a new project in the interim. Deadline reports that Greengrass may take on The Deep Blue Good-by, an adaptation of the pulpy John D. MacDonald crime novel that launched the character Travis McGee, beach bum and unlicensed private investigator. Even better? Leonardo DiCaprio is producing via his company Appian Way, and the film was initially developed as a potential star vehicle for him. Imagine if this and Inherent Vice get off the ground at the same time? Private Eye-palooza! [Deadline]

· Even if you haven't liked the chilly detachment of The Killing, this news should warm your heart. Series star Mireille Enos has begun talks to play Brad Pitt's wife in the long-simmering adaptation of Max Brooks' World War Z. Why is this good news? Because not only is Enos an up and comer who you wouldn't expect to see star opposite Brad Pitt, but the film is also reportedly on track to begin shooting this summer. [Deadline]

· 'Round these parts, Mindy Kaling is a heroine. As such, the news that she's been cast in Five Year Engagement opposite Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt and Jacki Weaver is almost comical. How many people that Movieline HQ simply adores can be in one movie? If director Nicholas Stoller is looking for other ideas, perhaps there's room for Aubrey Plaza, too? [Variety]

· It looks like American Reunion is angling to be the Scream 4 of 2012. Like that fourquel, Reunion has landed a spring release: April 6, 2012. [Deadline]

· Johnny Simmons is the new Jeremy Renner! Sorta, not really. The young actor -- who you know from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Jennifer's Body -- has landed three new roles. He'll co-star in 21 Jump Street, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Hand Job. Before you write a letter to your friendly neighborhood studio chief about "Johnny Simmons Fatigue," let's remember that all three of those movies could be pretty great. [Variety]

· Can HBO just pick-up the Aaron Sorkin cable news pilot for series already? Deadline reports that in addition to Marisa Tomei, Olivia Munn and Alison Pill are in talks for roles. Tentatively titled More As This Story Develops, Jeff Daniels is set to star. More as this story develops. Nyuck. [Deadline]

Leo as Travis?! No thank you!
That would cause a Deep Red Resentment.

For a moment there, I mixed up the headlines, and believed that Paul Greengrass was going to direct the American Pie sequel. Which would be something both amazing and awful.
    For many reasons.
