First Look at HBO Horse Racing Series Luck from Michael Mann

It's been nearly two years since Michael Mann last released a film (Public Enemies), but that doesn't mean that the Chicago director/writer/producer hasn't been busy. To prove this much, HBO uploaded a sneak peak of Luck, the original drama series that Mann is executive producing about the kind of people who frequent a horse racing track. Like Dustin Hoffman -- who in his first starring television role -- plays "Ace," the Tony Soprano of the track set.

Nick Nolte joins Hoffman as a Kentucky trainer "with a lot of mileage on him and a shadowy past," while Luck also stars John Ortiz, Joan Allen and Dennis Farina. Mann directed the pilot, which was written by David Milch (NYPD Blue and Deadwood). The series will premiere this fall. Early thoughts?

I've loved Nick Nolte since Rich Man, Poor Man. He can do no wrong.
As for the rest of it, the world of horse racing is a rich source of stories... Ever read Michael Klein's memoir, Track Conditions?

  • Couldn't agree more; I gotta check that book out.

I fine it quite interesting that Dennis Farina's character name in Luck is GUS D. Just so happens Gus was my wife's uncle and was a very savy thourbread horseman. He raised and bred race horses in Chino,Murretta and Temecula,Ca. He managed racehorse ranches for Farrel T. Jones and the famous Mrs. Tippet as well. Gus was Greek and very well known in horse racing circles in the 60's thru the 80's. I derict this question to the Luck prod. office for an answer, I have 46 years in the biz as a Gaffer/CLT and would really like an answer, Thank You,Earl Williman
