The fact that this is the second Superman movie in the last 5 years and for the second time it also avoids having any connection whatsoever to Smallville is indicative of many things, namely that Smallville only appeals to a very narrow audience. The mainstream movie going audience unfortunately has no interest in a glorified night time soap opera or it's massively unnecessary backstory and high school oriented plots.
Tom Welling may be great on the small screen, but he simply lacks the presence necessary to carry a major motion picture.
I do agree with you about Sucker Punch though. If they really felt the need to reboot Superman, they could have done much better than hiring Zack Snyder.
Plus, Warner Bros. also has a history of keeping their Superman movies separate from their television shows. They also tend to keep casts from one series from crossing over to another (the exception being Annette O'Toole, who originally played Lana Lang in Superman III and then came back as Martha Kent in Smallville).
Little known fact: when Warner Bros. were casting for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, they originally cast Gerard Christopher as Clark Kent/Superman...but then the director found out that he had played that role before in (imo, very poor telling of) The Adventures of Superboy. (The only reason I watched that show was because of Stacy Haiduk...hehe.)
