Please don't encourage this kind of behavior!! We don't need MORE remakes!! You call this responsible journalism?! *sigh*

I reject the premise that people thought Arthur was perfect for a remake. To me, it's a classic comedy that worked because of the perfect storm of writer/director, cast and timing. Otherwise it wouldn't have been so special, as we are about to find out this weekend.

"Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist" wasn't better than "Date Night", just more hipster-friendly. It was also boring as hell. Give me two comedy pros over Michael Cera's somnambulance any day. Movieline reviewers have been making some weird proclamations lately. A few weeks ago, your reviewer said "The Illusionist" was better than "The Prestige". There isn't a single alternate universe in which that's true and it's certainly false in ours. Maybe you need some fresh air. Get outside! You don't know what you're saying!

  • Christopher Rosen says:

    Disagree.
Date Night is fun (that's a great HBO watch), but it pales in comparison to Nick and Norah.
As for The Prestige and The Illusionist, I'm of the mind that both are terrible movies. Sorry.

  • T.I.C. says:

Agreed with the first two comments. It's extremely rare when a comedy remake actually beats the original ("Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" being the exception), but "Arthur" is a bona fide masterpiece of modernist screwball comedy. You can't match it with a remake, because most comedy filmmakers anymore just aren't capable of matching the tone, chemistry, and overall choices that went into making the original "Arthur."
If you don't believe that there are fans out there who aren't screaming in severe pain over the unneeded remake (especially when Warner Brothers won't even release a DVD of the widescreen version of the film with decent sound mix), then you aren't listening.

  • Christopher Rosen says:

If the remakes are done right — and done to movies that would lend themselves to some freshening up — then why not? Think Ocean's Eleven, not The Karate Kid.

  • SunnydaZe says:

THE LAST STARFIGHTER! Because of the evolution of gaming and CG the right kind of true update would be an entirely different experience. And check this> Zach Galifianakis as the alien recruiter with an unknown as the lead. It is about time for some new talent in the mix and hey, make the lead a girl.

  • Justine says:

I agree, please don't make any more! I don't care if they put a different spin on it/make a new movie but when they remake a perfect movie like The Karate Kid, it makes me hurl 🙁 Very sad about that, that was not okay Will Smith!!! Can't writers come up with their own ideas?

As a blogger, if you have not received any negative comments about one of your blog posts...You Will! You need to understand that not everyone is going to agree with you...and that is okay. Your site is doing good!
