Weekend Receipts: Hop Pops Up At Number One, Source Code Takes Second Place

Despite the star pedigree of Jake Gyllenhaal and the geek cred of director Duncan Jones, sci-fi thriller Source Code was topped by an animated bunny learning the new true meaning of Christmas Easter. At third place was the haunted house scare-em-up Insidious, possibly launching another profitable franchise for the brains behind Saw. Plus, the hotly debated Sucker Punch fell an astronomical 68.1% from last week -- if those number hold, it means it held up slightly better in its second weekend than Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (-68.5%) but not as well as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (-67.9%). Your weekend receipts are here.

1. Hop

Gross: $38,118,000 (new)

Screens: 3,579 (PSA: $10,650)

Weeks: 1

Man, I always feel conflicted when actors I like are in successful movies I dislike. I like Russell Brand and I really like James Marsden, but thought Hop was no good. But! I figure if they're in a hit movie, that increases the chance of seeing them in more movies. Internal conflict!

2. Source Code

Gross: $15,053,000 (new)

Screens: 2,961 (PSA: $5,084)

Weeks: 1

Everything I want to say about this movie would spoil it. So go out and see it! I'll get some deli and we can talk about it later.

3. Insidious

Gross: $13,496,000 (new)

Screens: 2,408 (PSA: $5,605)

Weeks: 1

I'll be honest, each time I read this title, I confuse it with Infamous, the Sandra Bullock Truman Capote movie from a few years back. Which would make an awesome mash-up film: a spooky house haunted by Truman Capote. That sounds terrifying.

4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Gross: $10,200,000 ($38,355,000)

Screens: 3,169 (PSA: $3,219)

Weeks: 2 (change: -57.1%)

Hurry up and film the next film in the series, Fox! You've got to strike while the cast is still young looking enough and before the puberty monster comes and renders all of them into squeaky-voiced sasquatches.

5. Limitless

Gross: $9,402,000 ($55,604,000)

Screens: 2,838 (PSA: $3,313)

Weeks: 3 (change: -37.6%)

I have officially run out of things to say about this movie, so I'll just point out that I watched The Godfather Part II last night. Guys, it's really good!
