No Baguettes Allowed in First Trailer for Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen's latest film, will open the Cannes Film Festival in May, but only one question should be on your mind before clicking ahead to watch the new trailer: Does the infamous Carla Bruni-held baguette make an appearance here? The answer may surprise you.

It does not. (Cue: Ominous music.) 35-take Bruni does appear, however, acting perfectly comfortable alongside a bearded Michael Sheen (who looks like Aidan Quinn when he grows facial hair), Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams. Judging from this trailer, Allen's latest dip into non-New York culture is a lot like his previous efforts (Match Point excluded): Extremely light, fluffy and full of Americans. Wilson and McAdams play an engaged couple in Paris who spend their days with Sheen and his new girlfriend. There's sexual tension abound, plus some strange Wilson night walks. It all looks perfectly fine, but veteran Allen fans might have their dander raised by Wilson's neo-Allen impersonation. Judging from this clip, he falls somewhere between Scarlett Johansson in Scoop and Kenneth Branagh in Celebrity on the scale of broad Woodys. For reference, that's not good.

VERDICT: It's Woody, so, sold; but with extreme caveats.
