Feathery New Poster for Passion Play Goes Black Swan Route
The strange tale of Passion Play will come to an end in May, when the Megan Fox-led film will be released both theatrically and on DVD (May 6 and 31 respectively). Holy short window, Batman! Just because the release of this long-in-development Toronto International Film Festival disappointment is being tossed off, though, doesn't preclude Passion Play from getting a poster -- one that even recalls Black Swan. Hey, why not?
A feather! See, because many, many people saw Black Swan. Ahem. If the goal of the poster was to make Passion Play look like some late-night Skinemax thriller, then job done; that image recalls something you might have found on a VHS case at Blockbuster in the mid-'90s. Also: Who knew Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray were playing Tom Waits and Robert Evans in this one?

Rourke looks like he's playing Garry Shandling, and doing a spot on job, I might add.
The most amazing part of the poster is the Christopher Doyle credit, which means this movie is gonna look FANTASTIC, even if the content isn't that spectacular. (Unless they went full Black Swan).
The Doyle credit excited me as well before I saw this in Toronto. Alas. This is a roundly terrible film, a curio of talent gone collectively, wildly wrong. Doyle is not immune, and why would he be? He couldn't even make _Lady in the Water_ bearable.
The question is, where are the lesbians?
Aye, but he made the behind the scenes documentary on the Lady in the Water DVD utterly terrific.
Especially when he reveals the hidden bar the crew built.
I saw the film at it's premiere in Toronto and loved it. Contrary to what's on the blogosphere, so did the audience. There was a huge ovation after the film and I heard everyone talking about how much they enjoyed it on their way out. It's romantic and old school and original. Definitely not for you Mr Rosen and you other snarky cynical critics... One wonders what IS 'cool' enough for you haters? OR how many lesbians DOES it take to satisfy an eternally thwarted 15 year old teenage level of taste and maturity? No wonder every movie is like a dopey video game (Inception) or the pretentious Shlocky Black Swan? Well done...
OK, I'll bite: I was at the TIFF premiere, too, and what you're saying isn't true. People openly laughed and/or walked out. There was an ovation, because EVERY fest premiere gets an ovation. On the way out of Ryerson all anyone discussed was how astonishingly bad it was. This isn't snark or cynicism but on-the-ground fact. And it's not like I wasn't anticipating a success or doing my best to play ball with the filmmaker.
Bottom line: Some things just transcend taste and schlock and really are fundamentally and objectively not good. Talent notwithstanding, this movie is one them. So. Troll elsewhere?
If I may...why is this a Black Swan rip off? Because it has a feather on it? Sorry, but that's an idiot argument. Megan Fox plays an ANGEL. There's a feather on it because SHE HAS FEATHERS.
As for the film, I'll wait to judge til I see it. I'll see anything chris Doyle shoots, and anything Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray are in. I'll bet it's better than Transformers. Then again, I like weird art films that no one else likes, like Tarsem's "The Fall" and I love Wong Kar-Wai type films.
