Did the Foo Fighters Slam Glee Just to Get Press For Their New Documentary?

FooFighters300.jpgSay you're a band with a project to promote. The easiest way to get some quick media attention is by picking a fight with a hugely popular entertainment entity (or Charlie Sheen), since the press is desperate for any new story involving said entity. With that understanding then, is it merely coincidental that the Foo Fighters decided to start trashing Glee just in time for the premiere of their documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth?

Shortly after premiering the Foo Fighters' documentary at SXSW, the band's frontman Dave Grohl spoke out about the pressure for bands to license their songs to Ryan Murphy's song and dance series on Fox.

"It's every band's right, you shouldn't have to do f*cking Glee," Grohl told THR. "And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we're not, like, begging to be on his f*cking show... f*ck that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee."

Why don't you tell us what you really think about Ryan Murphy, then?

"What a f*cking jerk," Grohl added. "Slash was the first one. [Ryan Murphy] wanted to do Guns N' Roses and Slash is like, 'I hate f*cking musicals. It's worse than Grease.' Then [Murphy's] like, 'Well, of course he'd say that, he's a washed up ol' rock star, that's what they f*cking do.' And then Kings of Leon say, 'No, we don't want to be on your show.' And then he's like, 'Snotty little a**holes...' And it's just like, 'Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included."

Judging from those statements, it's safe to say that you won't be hearing Finn sing "Everlong" or "My Hero" anytime soon (unless Gwyneth Paltrow brokers peace between Ryan Murphy and the latest band to take aim at his Fox series). Fortunately though, you can hear the Foo Fighters sing their own classics during the new U.S. tour that they (coincidentally?) just announced, which kicks off in April.

The more interesting conundrum here is: Why is Movieline implying that Grohl is dissing Murphy to promote his doc and tour, and yet I don't recall seeing any articles implying Ryan Murphy's many "disses" being used as promotional tools for his show? This CLEARLY shows Movieline has an axe to grind against Dave Grohl, Nirvana, grunge music, Seattle and quite possibly the 1990s, which was the Clinton era, which Rupert Murdoch hates, and Murdoch owns the Fox Network and Glee is on Fox and this will really piss off the illuminati...
...or of course, it could just be that Ryan Murphy is a whiny twat who shoots his mouth off too much and some people get sick of it. Not everything is a conspiracy, Movieline.

I'm with Grohl on this one. He's always been a respected musician in rock music, and a talented one at that. There aren't many instruments he doesn't play, and play proficiently. Not to mention he either wrote or co-wrote some of the best rock songs of the late 90's and early 2000's. Grohl isn't a hype monster, so I would venture to guess that it's all coincidence. They are still selling out their tours and win Grammy's. Grohl doesn't need to make money from documentaries and such. This story is silly, and quite frankly, Grohl hits it right on the nose; not everyone loves Glee or wants to see them goof up their favorite song. Thank God that Grohl is still the same old dude who is willing to be honest and speak his mind.

  • anna says:

Or maybe it's just like Grohl said - not everybody loves Glee! The media is so busy fawning over Ryan Murphy and his crappy show that that seems to have been forgotten.

  • tomterrific says:

yeah - what gives, movieline? this seems like a really weird angle to take on this story. everything ok over there?

  • Wellie says:

    Amen, sister.

  • John M says:

A dopey piece of writing, Julie Miller.
For many reasons, one being: lots and lots of people other than Dave Grohl don't care for Glee.

  • chanck says:

YEAH, Poo Farters is right, not everyone loves their songs, so just F**K off!!

  • ICEY says:

Foo Fighters themselves were covering songs of Nirvana, Led Zapellin, etc. So what's wrong with covering other singers' songs??
Are they going to ban all their songs from being sung in karaoke lounges all over the world also?? Foo Fighters is just a bunch of filthy HYPOCRITES!!

  • SweetCaroline says:

They're not banning everyone, they're just banning Glee because of Ryan Murphy's thuggish "let-us-use-your-song-or-else-we'll-talk-shit-about-you" blackmail tactics. And because it sucks.

  • Jack says:

Not to mention that A) Dave Grohl was actually IN Nirvana and co-wrote a number of songs and is a co-owner of the Nirvana catalog, and B) On several occasions when the Foo's covered a Zep song it was WITH Jimmy Page on-stage.
I love hearing from show choir directors of nationally recognized programs and award winning programs talk about how Glee is actually making things worse because the kids watching expect to be able to throw together a great show with little rehearsal as is depicted on Glee. Not to mention their covers of popular songs are campy-sugarcoated-pop messes.

  • DC says:

The writer of this "piece" clearly needs to have her head removed from her ass.
Good for Dave for not falling for Ryan Murphy's bullying. For a fella who says he's "anti'bullying", he sure does get pissy when people don't bow to his whims.
If you don't like Foo, fine - shut your pie hole and go back to your Bieber and Gaga.
And Icey - wow - you're just too f'ing retarded for words. Your musical ignorance should prohibit you from ever posting about anything, ever, again.

  • Brittany S. Pierce for President, 2012 says:

This is clearly a far bigger drama for Grohl and a few delusional Foo Fighters followers than for anyone involved with "Glee."
Little Davey comes off like an 8-year-old, and his "fans" even worse.
There's no way that any of the exchanges between Ryan Murphy and these people went down as Grohl described. I feel sorry for anyone that believes him.
    And I'm being kind.
