Applause.
Charlie will not be the next Downey. There are several reasons. Downey was younger and stupid, immature. He learned from his mistakes. Sheen has been living this way for years. Downey did not go out and make an ass of himself. Furthermore, Sheen's problem is not as simple as alcohol. it's a mental issue which will come to light if he doesn't follow Anna Nicole Smith.
Seconded. And not that slow clap stuff either.
Contrast Charlie's manic commentary with RDJ's rawly honest and gut-grabbing assessment of his own problems to a judge: "It's like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal."
Charlie Sheen is the next Andy Dick. The race is on!
That may be a stretch but it's possible. Downey hit bottom through hitting his bottom of jail and repeated criminal problems and got clean and sober because of it. His life turned around because he has stayed that way and is talented.
Sheen is also talented (Wall Street, Platoon), albeit not Downey's caliber. The problem is whether Sheen will ever hit bottom. Some people don't need to lose everything to reach that point but many do. With the wealth Sheen has amassed (which Downey didn't have close to when he reached his bottom), it may take longer for Sheen to get to his own bottom.
The three options for Sheen absent recovery are jail, institutions or death. The first two options could be the bottom necessary for him to get real help - Much like what happened to Downey - both for Sheen's addictions and his mental disease (he's most likely MICA or dual diagnosis).
The third option...well, that's where Michael Jackson, Anna Nichole, Janice Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain, et. al., ended up as a result of their addictions - as many do - both famous and not.
Also, let's not forget that both men have done some pretty despicable things that we tend to overlook because of the "entertainment" value of their self deprecation. Remember when Robert Downey Jr was all drugged out in some little kid's bed? Or when Sheen shot Kelly Preston?
If I did any of the things these guys do, I wouldn't have record breaking Twitter followers or multi million dollar deals to play comic book heroes. I'd be in fucking jail.
What would happen if the internet ignored Sheen's antics, even for just a day. Will he go away? Or just come back stronger?
Either way, Ma-Sheen doesn't even possess a fraction of the talent that Downey does.
Mmeeeeeeennnnnnnnn!
Classic.
