Is Christina Aguilera Suited for Judging Talent on NBC's The Voice?

aguileravoice225.jpgNow joining Cee-Lo Green and Maroon 5's Adam Levine on NBC's singing-competition series The Voice: Christina Aguilera! Hooray! She is a fine singer! Wait. Un-hooray. She's what makes pop radio completely unexciting.

The onetime genie has fallen on hard times recently, racking up a divorce, an unsuccessful album, and a public intox arrest in the past year. I sympathize with the decision to join The Voice, which has a panel star-studded enough to challenge both American Idol and X-Factor, but I can't get behind Christina Aguilera as either a coach or judge of talent. The 30-year-old pop star's songs are always big on vocal acrobatics ("Beautiful," "Candyman," "Ain't No Other Man") and short on the things Madonna, Whitney Houston, and even Idol's Jennifer Lopez stand for: fun, ebullience, and chutzpah.

I understand the show is called The Voice, so a performer like Aguilera -- whose sole talent is her astonishing instrument -- may be appropriate. But I think people like Lady Gaga and Adele, who have great voices but more importantly some self-awareness, keenness, and intellect, prove that the era of pop showboaters is a rightfully dated one. I look forward more to singer-songwriter competitions like Bravo's Platinum Hit than I do another round of platinum-blonde caterwaulers pummeling the bleachers with a glory note. It's not enough to have a voice; pop stars should have a handle on restraint (or, in the case of Lady Gaga, an owned sense of indulgence) too. I'm not even sure Aguilera has a handle on what makes an artist worthwhile beyond diva ululations and flappy hand gestures.

What do you think? Is Xtina a rightful judge of the X-factor?

I can't at this write up. Look at your title and your last sentence dude. The Voice and X Factor are not the same show, but I guess you probably just want to jump on the hate Christina bandwagon. At least pretend to be an educated journalist/blogger/whatever.

  • Emmanuel says:

Yeah she is! She's an amazing songwriter, her songs actually MEAN something (unlike Gaga's), she has managed her own career for over 10 years and she's the voice of her generation.
The only reason why you're putting her talent in doubt is because of this stupid fade of "throwing sh*t at Christina". How original are you...
She's got more talent than most of the other diva wannabes out there.

You honestly cannot be serious. Christinas Aguilera was listed as one of the best voices of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. THE youngest to make that list. A number of her peers have named her the voice of this generation and one of the best voices of our time. Her performances have dropped jaws with the sheer power of her voice alone(i.e. James brown Grammys tribute) and is listed as an influence for countless up and coming singers and new talent out there like Jennifer Hudson and yes even your beloved Gaga.
There isn't any other young female out there better suited to judge on a show about the voice and being a true vocalist. Regardless of whatever shade you try to throw at the incidents that have happened in her life one that has remained consistent, it is her amazing one of a kind vocal ability. The show is purely about that. Not on how to gain fame through goofy costumes, and desperate attention grabbing shocking performances. Where is the voice in that? Adele is a great example of another great vocalist but having barely released her 2nd album and not having that long of a track record i'd give her more time before judging on a show such as this.
At this point this silly article comes out as someone who isn't professional enough to remain unbiased on whatever personal feelings they may have towards a certain singer.
To answer your ridiculous question. Christina is MORE then suited. Just ask other great vocalists such as Celine, Whitney, Aretha, Patti, Etta James, etc.

Hating on Christina Aguilera seems to to be the cool thing to do these days.
And can everybody STFU about Lady Caca? Christina doesn't need to become an huge troll-clown-alien-fashionista-monster-fame, like Lady Whatever. She has her own amazing style!
I happen to love Aguilera's showboating. Aguilera is the best vocalist worldwide, you mad haters? You stupid haters are always trying to come up with the stupidest sh*t, in an attempt discredit Christina. Well you poor idiotic haters, Aguilera is here to stay! Get used to it.

  • Voice says:

Christina is not just the best singer worldwide.
She's also a great actress. A natural! She can dance. She is the MOST EPIC VOCALIST ON THE PLANET!! Everybody freaking wishes they could sing and SHOWBOAT like Christina Aguilera!!!
Lady Caca herself wishes she could replicate Aguilera's singing style, successfully. You can stay bitter, haters!

  • Evicted says:

What a complete lack of personal taste you have....how adorable that you seem to conveniently admire the two trendiest artists of the moment and dislike the one who is currently most picked on. I enjoy Adele's latest album, and please do't taint her with popstar competition and someone as tragically desperate as the other artist you mentioned. Get a sense of perspective outside of US Weekly, or just own your personal problem with Christina. It's not her, it's you.
She is one of the most gifted American pop cultural artists there has ever been. Everything she does is an effortless, iconic moment, that just rings from her life, and you are clearly too pressed by her beauty, talent and success to accept that. Enjoy watching bravo's crapathon.

  • Dana says:

    I agree. She is irrelevant.

  • Bort says:

Christina's actually a pretty smart woman!

  • Jebsen says:

She is MORE suited than anybody out there. Simply because she is THE VOICE. The best singer in whole world now! 🙂

  • JZ says:

Joining that desperate bandwagon. Not even worried about it since I know Christina will be back on top in no time.
Everyone goes through BS. She'll reign once again.

"It’s not enough to have a voice; pop stars should have a handle on restraint""
Ha. Its called showbusiness, not Don't show too much business. These other chicks are not showing "restraint" they can't sing. "Glory Notes" are not even an option on the table for many of them. Trust me, If they could, they would.
Christina has an amazing voice and everyone who has worked with her says she is the consumate professional and very knowledgeable behind the scenes with a great ear. She is perhaps the most appropriate judge on any of these shows period. Jennifer Lopez...SMH.

  • I think she has a great voice. But the "restraint" point is spot-on, Louis. She lets melisma overtake and undermine her sound.

  • Cant Bring Xtina Down says:

LOL at the stupid haters who wish Christina would change her singing style. STFU, she will never stop her melisma or belting! GTFO haters!
Christina's only problem is that she is WAY TOO TALENTED, and some people cannot take it or tolerate it!!! It makes them bitter, envious, crazy. Too bad for you!!!
I rejoice when I hear Christina's incredible vocals!!! You should do the same, you stupid haters!!!!!! We need more people like Xtina. Katy Wackerry can't sing to save her life!!!!!!!!! Clean your ears, you deaf fools!!!!!!!!!!
Extremely epic people like Xtina never get the respect and recognition they deserve.

some people have talent but can not judge and some people have no talent but can judge so i think she is talanted and she has been working for a long time so she is a smart person and she has a life experiance she hosted alote of shows before and she worked as an actress and she is a popstar(so she deserve to be a judge) and when paula abdul was in american idol i dont think she was relevent at all even simon cowell was irrelevent in USA all judges panel of idol were not known except JLO . she is relevent if she is not why all people take care about her when she is arrested why people in NBC wants her why simon cowell says that she is (nothing) and he has been asked about her in every interview and her songs been sang in all American ideol years until now even the CNN talks about her why is that ( she is underrated) coz she is not beautifull maybe or short or what her movie soundtrack is charging in itunes again #9 position she is irrelevent after 10 years or more but she has memorable work (yes she has problems now and she is not trusted as before but she still trying) she went to the voice without thinking that simon cowell x factor may destroy the show she dont need simon cowell she is working women that what i now about her no one until this moment she has the star power and time will show gaga is not a diva gaga only try to do odd things her music is inspiered(copy past) even born this way supposed to be a message people are dancing on!!!!!!!! i dont know how christina aguilera could handel all this hate she is outstanding

  • nadia says:

yes christina aguilera has a problem with being relevent after 2008 her real last hit was (keep getting better) and her last album was not a huge hit but went number one in some countrys (people still know her) in usa she is relevent (britny spears and christina aguilera fight) known for about 10 years a generation know her and outside america beleive it or not she is huge in germany jaban australia dutch latin america turky and she has a movie spread world waidly her problem that she dont has one style so people lost with her the national anthum remind people by her more now and all news spreading is about her (how come is not relevent) she only need to stand up and do good songs mainstream but with meaning i think after what happen with her she will foucs ony in her voice

  • nadia says:
