Weekend Receipts: True Grit Shoots Little Fockers Dead

Marshal Rooster Cogburn finally got his bounty in the form of box office gold as True Grit took the top spot after two weeks in second. Nicolas Cage's latest camp-a-thon, Season of the Witch came in third and proud Goop-er Gwyneth Paltrow's Country Strong came in movie-weak at number six. Your weekend receipts are here.

1. True Grit

Gross: $15,000,000 ($110,430,000)

Screens: 3,124 (PSA: $4,802)

Weeks: 3 (change: -38.6%)

Any thoughts on where Hallie Steinfeld will end up come Oscar nomination time? I'm betting she'll get nominated, but I just don't know if she'll end up in the Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress category. It's a lead role, but I hope she ends up in Supporting, if only to better her chances. Which clearly makes me a shameless booster.

2. Little Fockers

Gross: $13,781,000 ($123,982,000)

Screens: 3,675 (PSA: $3,750)

Weeks: 3 (change: -46.5%)

Y'see, it's funny because his name is Focker, but it sounds just like the word "Fucker!" And that's very funny! Plus, his first name is Gaylord. Even more funny!

3. Season of the Witch

Gross: $10,726,000 (new)

Screens: 2,816 (PSA: $3,809)

Weeks: 1

A person more mathematically inclined than me should make a graph, charting the various ebbs and flows of the assorted anachronistic accents in this thing. That monk's from Canarsie! Nic Cage's has got an English accent except when he doesn't!

4. Tron:Legacy

Gross: $9,803,000 ($147,925,000)

Screens: 2,816 (PSA: $3,254)

Weeks: 4 (change: -47.7%)

Who would have thought that a Coen Brothers movie would end up outgrossing this thing? Now I guess we'll never know your backstory and plans, distractingly-cast Cillian Murphy cameo!

5. Black Swan

Gross: $8,350,000 ($61,455,000)

Screens: 1,584 (PSA: $5,271)

Weeks: 6 (change: -6.0%)

I'll be honest, I still haven't seen this movie. I'm the most squeamish person this side of the pupils of Miss Feathersham's School for Fainting Girls, and I just can't bring myself to watch the madness. Maybe this week will the week I finally gird myself for the horrors of a ballerina story.

6. Country Strong

Gross: $7,300,000 ($7,437,000)

Screens: 1,424 (PSA: $5,126)

Weeks: 3 (change: +17,487.8%)

Don't worry, Gwyneth, there's always Cee-Lo and Glee! Namaste.

Comments

  • Country Strong? More like Country WRONG, amirite?!?

  • The Winchester says:

The best accent nonsense in Season of the Witch belongs to the British guy from Snatch who decided to do an American accent the whole time.
And that's the only thing I can recall having seen the whole picture

  • Brian says:

As much as I'd like this movie to fail ( I hate anything country) it's doing ok for a movie with a $15 million dollar budget and very little marketing. It's PSA is decent at over $5,000. It will turn a profit after DVD, so it isn't a success, but isn't really a failure either.
