Patton Oswalt Jams a Stake Into Geek Culture

patton_oswalt_thumb.jpgOver the course of 2,700 words, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt thoroughly and explicitly underlines everything that's wrong with pop culture at the dawn of 2011. "When everyone has easy access to their favorite diversions and every diversion comes with a rabbit hole's worth of extra features and deleted scenes and hidden hacks to tumble down and never emerge from, then we're all just adding to an ever-swelling, soon-to-erupt volcano of trivia, re-contextualized and forever rebooted," he writes in Wired. "We're on the brink of Etewaf: Everything That Ever Was--Available Forever." For reference, that's bad. Don't worry, Oswalt will helpfully explain why. [Wired]

Just because information has become easier than ever to access doesn't negate the existence of closed-minded stupid people. To them the internet is a place for facebook, porn, and people making asses of themselves on youtube.
In contrast to Oswald's essay, I believe the internet has created an almost infinite class system of nerd. The otaku has become diverse as information itself. Young cliques are defined by a combination> i.e. the Final Fantasy Mash-up, Metal Gear Cosplay, Bob Dylan, Marx Bros., Orson Scott Card, Shadow Run, Miley Cyrus, Ass Dan, fan club. Much more interesting than a bunch of social outcasts who think simply quoting Monty Python out of context gives them secret superhero powers.

Love Patton Oswalt. Just watched his stand up special My Weakness is Strong while stuck at the airport. As a DISH employee I got their TV Everywhere app pretty much the day it dropped, and love this thing. Got some weird looks when I kept cracking up though. I was like the only person in the airport not rocking the perma-scowl!
