The Coen Brothers, Community Lead Golden Globe Snubs

The Golden Globe nominations: A time when everyone on the Internet feigns outrage at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for ignoring their personal favorites in favor of Johnny Depp. Ahead, the five biggest snubs from this year's somewhat hilarious nomination crop.

True Grit

As it turns out, the HFPA did see True Grit -- just last night some prognosticators were saying how tough it would be for the voting block to ignore the latest from the Coens. Spoiler: They did. Completely. Not even young Hailee Steinfeld grabbed what was assumed to be her birthright: A Best Supporting Actress nomination. The old adage goes that the Globes love young stars; perhaps Hailee was just too young.

Community

You can add Parks & Recreation, Party Down, Louie, The United States of Tara and The Office to this as well. Before going Def-Con 4 on your Twitter feed, though, consider this: The Globes did nominate 30 Rock, The Big C, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Glee and Nurse Jackie. You could argue that Nurse Jackie and The Big C weren't great, but they're certainly worthy of being in the conversation -- and will be come Emmy time next year. Maybe we should just chalk these comedy snubs up to the fact that there are a lot of good comedies airing on television today, and not all of them can get a nomination. (Note: Don't try to say the HFPA just didn't "get" your favorite show; this is an organization that nominated Arrested Development. Twice.)

Lost

Looks like someone didn't like the final season of Lost. Not that the ABC series were ever awards-bait, but to not mention the final season once in these nominations feels like a cold slap from the Man in Black. Damon Lindelof is probably preparing a snarky tweet about it right this second.

Aaron Paul

Let's see: Aaron Paul was good enough to win an Emmy Award for his work on Breaking Bad, but not good enough to get nominated by the Golden Globes. Makes sense. Certainly Scott Caan was better on Hawaii 5-0 this fall than Paul was. (/sarcasm)

Another Year

No Mike Leigh? No Jim Broadbent? No Lesley Manville? Don't the Globes love British people? I'm confused.

The Globes have never nominated Mike Leigh. Not once. Never.

  • But is Nurse Jackie even a comedy?

  • anonymous says:

Is the Tourist even a comedy? Surprised Rabbit Hole didn't get more noms since they love to suck up to movie stars.

  • Reese says:

What about Friday Night Lights? Any list that omits Friday Night Lights is invalid.

  • anita says:

i can't believe it's already nearing award season!

  • True Grit totally should have been nominated, it definitely has more cred then some of the movies that got nominations. Here's my reaction to the nominations: http://amandamoutinho.posterous.com/jesse-eisenberg

  • Roger says:

The real crime was not nominating Raising Hope and Martha Plimpton for Best Comedy Actress. The series is wicked funny and Plimpton has pitch perfect sarcastic comedy timing.

  • Nerd says:

What about 'Somewhere'? That was my favorite film of the year. Although, I have not seen True Grit or Blue Valentine (or the Tourist, but the less we say about that the better) so one of those could take my top spot. I hope that at least Academy gives Sofia a little love with an Oscar nom in any category.
FWIW, the HFPA is notorious for snubbing the Coen brothers films. It's almost like every year they feel the need to remind everyone why they are not as respected as the Oscars by nominating films like The Tourist, Alice In Wonderland, and Burlesque, and snubbing much more deserving films in the process.

  • RT says:

Oh yes and Piper Perabo is more worthy of a Golden Globe nom than Glenn Close or Connie Britton. Puhleeze....(/sarcasm)

Why should LOST be awarded for completely betraying and ripping off its core audience?
