Deaths at Disney Town and 7 Other Stories You'll be Talking About Today

Also in the Friday edition of The Broadsheet: Disney readies another two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels... James Bond will return with Sam Mendes... Jean-Luc Godard turns 80... and more ahead.

· What a bad week for the residents of Celebration. The Disney-developed Florida community saw its first murder happen last week (so far it has been unsolved), and then earlier this morning a man killed himself after shooting at town authorities; neither incident is believed to be related. Now, what do they mean by "Disney-developed"? Our own Brian Clark says he went to Celebration on a family vacation: "It's eerie; a gated community where every house is the same and there's a downtown center with a grocery store, movie theater, and everything else, so no one ever has to leave the neighborhood. There's an old school ice cream parlor, too." Sounds creepy! Expect a horror movie based on these events starring Patrick Wilson to hit theaters in the next 18 months. [CBS, Gawker]

· According to Drew McWeeny, Disney is so pleased with Rob Marshall's work on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides that they've been quietly telling cast and crew members to prepare for another two sequels. Disney wants to shoot the films back-to-back, a la the first Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, meaning Johnny Depp will be wearing his Jack Sparrow eyeliner well past the Mayan-dictated end of the world. · It looks like the next James Bond isn't dead just yet. At least, according to Kate Winslet. "Sam [Mendes] is doing the next Bond film, all being well, and we'll all be in England if that happens," she told the Daily Mail. "It's such a massive commitment for him and it's not fair for him to commute backwards and forwards to New York from London. It would be impossible. The children will be there with me." [Daily Mail]

· Jean-Luc Godard turns 80 today. Happy Birthday, Jean-Luc! We got you an honorary Oscar to celebrate. [Mubi]

· Time for another round of adventures in headline writing. "EXCLUSIVE: Mad Men Actress Joins McG's This Means War," screams THR. Which is technically true, only by "Mad Men actress" they mean Abigail Spencer. Who? Right. She played Don's season three mistress, Miss Farrell. Anyway, she's doing this. [THR/Heat Vision]

· Congratulations to Kirsten Cohen! Er, Kelly Rowan. The former matriarch on The O.C. has landed a lead role in the TNT pilot, Perception. [Deadline]

· Hello, Denver. "A robot met its end near Coors Field tonight when the Denver Police Department Bomb Squad detonated the 'suspicious object,' bringing to an end the hours-long standoff between police and the approximately eight-inch tall figurine." [Denver Post]

· Let's all laugh at Cleveland...again: Lebron James returned to his former city last night for the first time as a member of the Miami Heat, was summarily booed and then dropped 38 points as his current team cruised to a blowout win. [ESPN]

What a crock of crap about Celebration. It is not gated, the houses are far from the same, and the downtown stores are all aimed at tourists so people have to leave for something as simple as a gallon of milk. Next time talk to someone who has actually been there, not someone who makes stuff up out of whole cloth.

  • Brian Clark says:

I went very soon after it had opened, but though it was open to the public, we had to talk to a guard to get in, The houses did all look the same complete with perfectly cut yards, and there was a self contained town center with all sorts of amenities. Maybe it's changed since then. The grocery store, if it's not in the center, is not more than a half minute out of the neighborhood, correct?

Wow. The town is very nice... I am 18 and have grown up in the town since I was a child. It is a great place to live and not creepy at all so stop the asinine reporting.
