Report: James Franco, Anne Hathaway May Host Oscars

james_franco_tmi_120-1.jpgBreaking: Nikki Finke writes that she's "just learned that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has asked James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host the Academy Awards, and it 'looks like' both young stars have accepted the offer. There is always the chance that one of them might back out because of prior commitments. But my sources say the host announcement could be made as soon as this week." Oh, so this is what they meant by wanting to work on the Alien prequel. Great euphemism! [Deadline]

Wait a minute - aren't they both pretty hot contenders for acting awards this year (127 Hours/Love and Other Drugs)? Wouldn't that be a little awkward?

  • 84volvo says:

Considering he's a strong contender for an actual win (shoo-in for non), why would Franco sign up for this? Seems like it would hurt his chances for an actual win. But then again, why does Franco do anything... probably actually makes sense for him.

Awesome! Uninteresting hosts for an uninteresting year!

    Does no one remember 1989??

  • Allan says:

This is a joke right?? I look my hosts to be funny. Any indication either of them are funny as hosts? Granted Franco was hilarious in Pineapple Express but that's different than acting. Hathaway has never been intentionally funny. Come to think of it, she was pretty funny in Havoc. Anyways, my money is on that this will be a losing proposition.
I would have gone with Jane Lynch.

She can sing. They both have broad ranges as actors. To me, the choice indicates that the show really is about the writing, and who the writers are. Maybe that's where the focus should be every year. Is it always Bruce whats-his-face? Don't hosts bring in their own writers sometimes? Let's pull back the curtain and talk about the unsung heroes.

Interesting choice, its nice to see young hollywood stars taking the reigns. Thats a suprising pairing…but interesting….will see!

I really don't understand the appeal, of either of these choices. James Franco is a boring actor which will likely lead to him being a boring host. Anne Hathaway is barely passable as eye candy; and she is, also, a boring actor. Boring+boring will result in awkward, witless banter; and will leave everybody wishing they had just let James Earl Jones read off a list, of all the winners rather than bother with what will end up being an Oscar equivalent of an Ambien pill.

So, James Franco and Anne Hathaway are hosting the Oscars. I'm supposed to be happy considering that one of the hosts was on "Freaks and Geeks" to start its career, but for some reason, I'm just meh about the whole thing. Plus, I was only half right about who's going to have the most successful post-F&G career (Franco being one of them). Meanwhile Linda Cardellini is just lucky to just to get supporting Indie roles.
I'm not taking anything away from the other cast members of F&G: Seth Rogen is suprisingly the most sucessful of the group besides Franco, Jason Segel came into his own with How I Met Your Mother and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Even Busy Philipps managed to land a cushy supporting role in Cougartown. So far, very little luck for Ms. Cardellini after her six-year long run in ER.
I wish she could make a big comeback in Hollywood soon because I would like to see Linda be involved in a big project soon to make her a star and possibly be nominated for major film awards. Linda needs to contact Judd Apatow to see if there are any major female lead in his films that she could showcase her talent.
The Geeks aren't doing too bad either although they are mostly doing supporting roles with Martin Starr doing Dinner Party, Samm Levine did Inglorious Bastards with Quientin Tarentino, and John Dailey is doing Bones. I like to see big things from them someday as well.
