Weekend Receipts: Harry Potter Manages To Beat Out Pretty-Haired Ladies Over Holiday Weekend

harrypotterdeathly1_rev_1.jpgThe weekend box office was once again good to the children of Hogwarts as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 managed to claim the top spot, despite a surprisingly strong push from the follicularly themed Tangled. Sadly, it was not all good news for shiny haired princesses as Cher and Anne Hathaway found themselves experiencing a severe holiday hangover. Your weekend receipts are here.

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

Gross: $50,300,000 ($222,500,000)

Screens: 4,125

Weeks: 2

The latest Harry Potter managed to easily make its way across the $200 million mark, with no help from amped up 3D prices. WB execs are no doubt searching for some way to convince good old J.K. to pen a prequel.

2. Tangled

Gross: $48,600,000 ($68,500,000)

Screens: 3,603

Weeks: 1

The weekend's biggest surprise was Disney's latest animated flick, which nearly doubled expectations with the help of that glorious 3D ticket pricing. Hope you stocked up on those Rapunzel dolls for the kids on Friday!

3. Megamind 3D

Gross: $12,900,000 ($130,000,000)

Screens: 3,411

Weeks: 4

Hey, you gotta take the kids to something when you find out Tangled is sold out...

4. Unstoppable

Gross: $11,600,000 ($60,500,000)

Screens: 3,183

Weeks: 3

Hey, you gotta take the kids to something when Tangled AND Megamind 3D are sold out...

5. Burlesque

Gross: $11,600,000 ($17,000,000)

Screens: 3,037

Weeks: 1

The inspired teaming of Cher and Christina proved to not quite be the Beyonce and Jennifer of Dreamgirls, but something tells me this little gem will be finding a very nice place on the LOGO network by next Thanksgiving.

6. Love And Other Drugs

Gross: $9,600,000 ($13,800,000)

Screens: 2,455

Weeks: 1

It appears audiences only want to see Jake and Annie when he's a gay cowboy and she is rocking an assortment of odd wigs. Apparently no amount of nudity, tears or artistically controlled hand shaking could get anyone in the seats for this weepie.

7. Faster

Gross: $8,500,000 ($11,800,000)

Screens: 2,454

Weeks: 1

Did anyone even know this movie was being released this week?

I'm kind of surprised that Potter won the weekend (though not by much). All the parents I know wrote on their Facebook pages that they were off to Tangled with their kids. I waited a week to see Deathly Hollows in Calif., and noticed my 7 p.m. screening Friday night was only half full (and only one Gryffindor scarf...not mine). I'm thinking of Burlesque tonight, and I'm not surprised it finished where it did -- not enough gay men can pull that across the line. I've now decided to "wait for Netflix" on Love and Other Drugs.

  • No one could have really thought Burlesque would be a hit, could they? I mean, that thing has cult (gay) hit, at best, written all over it. It'll make make its money off of DVDs and officially licensed drag queen accessories.

  • The Winchester says:

My showing of Burlesque was only half full, and only half of them were there ironically.

Burlesque would be a hit in a land where Chicago, Nine and Glee seem to be popular. Faster was dreadful, maybe HBO worthy, The Rock just drives around shooting people in the head with extra characters you don't need and a failed attempt to have a "Usual Suspects" hook at the end. Almost NONE of what is in the trailer is in the actual movie.

  • Sally in Chicago says:

I loved Unstoppable and it's showing legs.

Wow was the first half of Love and other drugs ATROCIOUS! i assume it gets good once hathaway becomes more prominent. I have no prob with jake but the movie seems to think he's a charisma machine, and he comes up empty. its a bore-a-thon and his brother is right out of Annoying-Stock-Character-101. we walked out and caught a much better romcom two screens over.
