Watch Likely Oscar Nominees Get Stoned and Fight Monsters in Your Highness Trailer
I'm picturing director David Gordon Green as a teenager, watching 80's B-movies while totally high and imagining how amazing it would be if the characters in said B-movies were also stoned out of their mind. At some point, as we all must, he grew out of this phase, and later directed critical darlings like George Washington and All the Real Girls. Then one night it hit him: "Those days on the couch in the 80's were the best!" Moreover, "What if all of the characters in those movies were totally high?" And thus, we got Pineapple Express and now the NSFW red band trailer to Your Highness, which pits Natalie Portman, James Franco and Danny McBride against three-headed creatures, sorcerers and potent marijuana.
To be fair, that's just one possible explanation, and honestly, it's probably too logical. How this mix of prestige actors, stoner-humor and Dragonheart-level aesthetics came to be might be best left as a mystery anyway.
Besides a few moments, this trailer isn't particularly funny. But it's so bizzare, goofy and audacious (in it's way), that I'm still down to give it the benefit of the doubt. Portman and Franco deserve to have some fun after giving two of the most harrowing performances of the year, so good for them. Also those who have been waiting for Zooey Deschanel to re-unite with David Gordon Green ever since All the Real Girls: Rejoice!
Verdict: Sold. Stay tuned to see whether this trailer has any impact on Movieline's Oscar Index.

Recreational drug use is not humorous, that it goes on and on is evident in America as it slips into third world status as a nation. No wonder we lose all the wars we start, America is stoned and does not care a whit about anything but getting high.
Danny McBride makes everything less funny. And Sean Maguire was ten-times better than Franco in the straight-man princely hero role. In fact, every single player in Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire was funnier than these actors, and that show was cancelled after a few episodes.
