Hollywood Reporter: 'No Sinister Motive' Behind All-White-Guy Power Cover
Some grumbling both on- and offline ensued Tuesday after the new-look Hollywood Reporter released its "Next Gen 2010" issue, the cover of which featured one-seventh of its upwardly mobile "35 Under 35" industry talent pool. Well-deserving hot shots, no doubt, but why so... white? And why all dudes?
After all, the balance of agents, lawyers, producers, studio/network execs, managers, publicists and the like inside this week's special section breaks down to 24 men and 11 women, with several minorites also making the cut. (Technically, the 12 talent selections aren't included in the final tally, which would make it 30-17 guys.) Yet there are pale males Alex Goldstone, Andrew Miller, Brent Morley, Josh Hornstock and Todd Christopher rocking their suits on behalf of everyone from CAA to WME to ICM. What gives?
THR sent over an official explanation to Movieline:
"We're flattered that our cover selections have prompted reader debate, but there's really no sinister motive behind them. The Next Gen list is evenly split between men and women, and includes several non-white guys. When selecting the cover shot we just picked the most compelling image from our photoshoot, and this year it happened to be all men. Of course we're aware Hollywood needs more diversity (we actually just did a piece about the whiteness of the Oscar race, and we're about to publish our annual Women in Entertainment issue) but the cover selections were not intended to make any statement. If anything, people should be mad that we put so many agents on the cover. Those guys don't need bigger egos."
Well, yeah. I mean, if it's between them and Emma Stone...

Why so focused on race and gender? What does it matter? Stop looking at that crap and look at the character of the person, like MLK said.
The Hollywood Reporter completely missed the point of the criticism, but I guess that's to be expected.
Look at the character of the person?
Remember, this is Hollywood after all.
Yeah, but how is their Spanglish?
Hollywood has no future. It's just the same stuff over and over again, now. If it weren't for the great comic book creators large and independent they would be toast.
Enjoy the next Chipmunks movie you hacks. This is coming from 'The world's Worst killers.'
Race and gender only applies to conservatives. The Obama justice department has given all liberals a waiver.
FAIL with the use of MLK card...MLK said that he had a dream that one day his kids would live in nation where the will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character----how that relates to a THR cover with all white boys is beyond me.
