Weekend Receipts: Megamind Stops Unstoppable From Reaching The Station

Unstoppable proved to be anything but, as Megamind took first place for the second weekend in a row (though the surcharge for 3D probably helped push it over the edge). The Denzel Washington / Chris Pine / Speeding Chrysler Building action flick had to settle for the second spot. Meanwhile, neither aliens nor grumpy Harrison Ford could find purchase with audiences this weekend, coming in at numbers four and five, respectively (let's hope more people will like grumpy Harrison Ford AND aliens by the time Cowboys and Aliens rolls around). 1. Megamind

Gross: $30,055,000 ($89,757,000)

Screens: 3,949 (PSA: $7,611)

Weeks: 2 (change: -34.7%)

Individually, I really like Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt a lot. But I really can't muster up anything for this movie. But it's making money hand over blue fist, so somehow I imagine those three probably would prefer the high grosses over my enthusiasm.

2. Unstoppable

Gross: $23,500,000 (new)

Screens: 3,207 (PSA: $7,328)

Weeks: 1

It's actually a pretty nifty little B action movie, but I'm really glad that SNL got Jay Pharoah to make fun of it, because to be honest, for the first 45 minutes, all I could see was his impression rather than Denzel himself. Denzel wasn't overacting, exactly...more like extra-acting. Just more acting than was necessary. But hey! ::clap, clap:: alright! alright! I still liked it! My man!

3. Due Date

Gross: $15,530,000 ($59,008,000)

Screens: 3,365 (PSA: $4,615)

Weeks: 2 (change: -52.5%)

A bit of a precipitous drop from last week, it'll probably eventually squeeeeeak past the $100 million mark. Maybe. I hope that's positive enough for the director.

4. Skyline

Gross: $11,678,000 (new)

Screens: 2,880 (PSA: $4,055)

Weeks: 1

As a former Ohioan, let me just register my disappointment that this was not a lavish, special effects-filled tentpole movie about Skyline Chili. I even brought a baked potato to the screening. Color me both dissatisfied and hungry.

5. Morning Glory

Gross: $9,625,000 (new)

Screens: 2,518 (PSA: $3,822)

Weeks: 1

I'm a little sad because this is the first weekend in a month that Red isn't in the top five. I really grew attached to those murderous old codgers, and since it'll probably gross triple what Morning Glory will make, I imagine Harrison Ford might also be a little sad that he didn't return their calls to join the movie.
