Erin Andrews on This Week's Insane Dancing with the Stars: 'I Feel Like I Took Truth Serum'

Dancing with the Stars is getting so outrageous that I almost need Erin Andrews on the phone with me as I watch. It's maddening! With Bristol Palin surviving another week and Carrie Ann Inaba sparring with Maks, it's easy to get a little huffy. In our epic interview this week, Miss Andrews discusses her love of Kyle Massey, Brandy's emotions, Maksim Chmerkovskiy's passion, and the possibility that Bristol will make it to the finals.

Yet another zany week, Erin. How did you feel about the "instant dance" idea?

I thought it was a great idea. It's funny, my girlfriends and I were talking during the show and texting. They were saying, "My gosh, if I had been on the show when the instant dance happened, I'd have had a meltdown." I mean, musicality? I do think I can hear beats in the music and stuff, but it's different when you hear the band playing it and you have to perform it. It does get a little chaotic. I was so impressed by the way everybody came out and really seemed to nail it. I didn't think they were going to get time to practice it. That was new to me. I thought they were just going to get the song and have to go. I'm glad they had time to practice.

But I have to tell you, when Kyle came out and did his jive, I was screaming in my living room. He's amazing. I was just so excited for [Kyle] and Lacey; I think he's a contender for the final. He's a contender for the mirror ball. He's just a different kind of dancer. He's just kind of silly! And he's learning every week. When they came out and they did the first instant dance, I was like, "OK, wow. This is incredible."

When I watched him kill it this week, I thought, 'Is the Erin Andrews prophecy coming true?' He might run away with this.

I know! He's phenomenal.

Your boy Maks had a slight kerfluffle with Carrie Ann this week. How did you react? Did you hurl things at the TV? Scream, etc.?

I think that when I first heard them [spar], I was like, "Oh gosh. Oh no." But then when I thought about it what happened afterward when they went to commercial -- he's so sweet. He was just sticking up for Brandy. A lot of the time when the judges comment on the choreography, the way the dance was planned out, the pros take it upon themselves to say, "Just judge her for the dance. Don't judge her for the choreography." That's all he was doing. He's very, very protective over his stars. He wants them to feel comfortable. He made a comment to me one night before the show started about my wardrobe, and he said, "I just want you to walk down those stairs and feel the most glamorous and beautiful you've ever felt in your entire life." He wants nothing but for his stars to feel the absolute best about themselves. You could see from the package that they showed with Brandy, he said, "Look, it's just about us. It's about nobody else. Do this for yourself." That was just Papa Bear taking over and being really protective over his baby. I knew they'd make a big deal about it on all the gossip shows and in the tabloids and on the results show. I don't know if you saw, but afterward, when Kurt was out, Maks went down and -- he's so sweet -- he hugged Kurt right away. And then he went off -- I watched him in the background -- he hugged Carrie Ann. I think in the end Carrie Ann knows what he's doing. He lets his emotions get the best of him, but that's why he's so wonderful.

Can you recall any times when the judges criticized you for things you couldn't control, like the choreography?

Oh, absolutely. Our samba that we did -- I had this gorgeous purple feather outfit with a nude top and embroidery. Our story that we were telling -- and this is why I love Maks, but -- he thinks of these different stories. Our dance, the song was "When I Get You Alone." He was like, "I want to pretend you're coming home from a glamorous ball. And I'm this guy, and I'm all over you. And you're like, 'No, no, no, no. Let me have a second.'" It was so awesome. There was a part when I rip off his sleeves and then I rip open his shirt, and then he ripped off his shirt. Well, Len went to town that night and just said, "I'm tired of it, Maks. She's a good dancer. I'm tired of you taking off your clothes." And Maks was like, "You're not listening! You're not understand the theme of our song." I got OK scores. I didn't get the greatest scores on it. But he really felt like we were being penalized -- I was being penalized -- because Maks took his shirt off. The next week we did our foxtrot where we joked he would take his shirt off, but then we decided not to in the middle of the dance. Yeah, he got really frustrated with the judges. He said, "You're penalizing Erin for something I created."

Jennifer Grey racked up a perfect score this week. If any dance this week was worth 30 points, do you think it was hers?

Well, her instant dance got the perfect score, right?

Yes.

I thought her instant dance was hot. I mean, that's what I wrote down in my notes. I wrote, "Wow. J. Hot." I'm such a dork in that I thought one of the moves was like in Dirty Dancing when he put his hand down her arm and then he spun her out. And that extension that she held was so beautiful. I have goosebumps thinking about it. I wasn't surprised that she got all 10s in that routine at all. Now I will say -- in her first dance, I loved the dance, I loved the dress, I was excited when I saw her dance, but (sighs) again, with all the "My body's falling apart" stuff. I read on somebody's tweet, I forget whose it was, but they were like, "Is she lying to us about her injury?" She builds up this "I'm hurt, I'm hurt, I'm hurt," and then she comes out, does the dance, and she's insane. So I can understand her body falling apart, but I appreciated this week that there wasn't a lot of crying. I appreciated that. She can't help that her body's falling apart; I like her playing it low-key, instead of being hysterical and everything like that. She went out there and I think she put herself on top of the leader board again. From her first dance to her instant dance, it was "Wow. Wow. Wow." That's the girl we saw at the beginning of the season and I think she put herself back on top.

She's got to be really, really careful with her packages though in the next two weeks. You don't want America to just get tired of the crying and the "My body's falling apart." It's OK because at this point in the competition, everybody's body is falling apart. Evan [Lysacek] had broken toes! He had a head injury. I had a broken foot which I didn't know about. We just knew my foot was swollen every single day, and we didn't know why. And I had a back injury. The day of the finale, we were doing run-through, we did my dance, and something popped in the middle of run-through. I started hysterically crying, and Maks was like, "What, what, what?" And I'm like, "It's fine, let's just go." At this stage of the game, everybody is hurt. You can't cry about it, and you have to soldier on.

It sounds like you're saying that Jennifer is the front-runner, but maybe Kyle or Brandy can take that from her very soon.

I'll be very, very honest. I think Jennifer is absolutely the front-runner right now. She's America's sweetheart. I'd hate to sound corny, but she's "Baby" to America. I think everybody loves the storyline that she's 50 years old and she's doing things with her body that are incredible. She looks wonderful. But I'll be very candid in the fact at all these packages and America's vote could really hurt her if she continues being very emotional. She can be injured and she can talk about that, but don't use that as the only thing you're talking about. She has a beautiful husband, a gorgeous daughter, friends who come to support her. Maybe use that. It was nice to see her dad in the package. But there is a guy named Kyle Massey who is so cute, so likable, and so fun. And he makes fun of himself -- and I used to do that, people love it when you make fun of yourself -- and he is becoming very charming to America. She needs to watch out for that. He may come out of the back, the back of the field there, and take over all the votes. Because people may start to get tired of it.

Erin you are a major b!tch! Even if you didn't like Brandy you could have said something nice about her Waltz, she got 29 for it and a standing Ovation! I thought you were better than this, you're just making yourself look small. I thought you were so in love with Maks, so why aren't you trying to help him get the MBT? This isn't just entertainment for him DWTS is his job, and part of how he supports his family, surly you know that. You can talk about other couples, but to in not so many words tell people to go vote for Kyle and Jennifer is just mean! Why are you trying to ruin Maks shot at a winning? No matter who he's with you should have his back. You probably the one stirring up all the trouble Maks was talking about in his blog. As my grandmother always use to say. "The truth will out" also karma is a b!tch, so I hope it's not you stirring up all this trouble because what goes around comes around.

Mak should come to Erin's defense about what she said in her blog this week. Deep down Erin did not intend to be nasty about Brandy. Erin was just telling the obvious fact and truth of what viewers have been saying and looking at for the last several weeks. And if Maks was a true friend of Erin Andrews he would come to her defense.

  • Officer Nolan's Wife. says:

Maks was never rude, which is saying a lot for Maks as he isn't exactly Mr. Tact, Erin is just coming across as catty and a little bit jealous, but I don't think it's because of Maks, I think its because she knows Brandy is (hands down) a better dancer than she is. If she thinks Brandy is being too emotional all she had to do was say so. No need to add that She and Evan laugh at Brandy, no need to bring up how fluffly and funny you were in the past, I didn't find you to be funny at all Erin, I found you very annoying, but to each their own. I have to agree that Erin should have NEVER made to the third place, she thinks she a better dancer than she is, her showmance with Maks helped keep her on longer than she should have been on there, so don't talk about Bristol honey. I find Erin to be VERY annoying , so where she gets off thing everyone finds her to be a breath of fresh air is beyond me. My husband and his friends can't stand her either, when she comes on TV when he's watching sports he mutes the TV, a lot of guys don't like her. She got a ego as big as a football field.

  • Erin great article you were asked to critique dwts and that is what you have done. It is really sad how people twist your words to make them selfs feel better I agree with all that you have said and know you do not have a mean bone in your body. I enjoy reading your articles and I know that you know excatly what these dancers are going through because you have been there done that. Don't let all these negative people get to you and I praise you for telling it like it isKeep up the good work and I just wish people would leave you and Maks's friendship out of this

  • Maks fan 4 life! says:

Deep down she didn't intend to be nasty? Yeah right, what did someone force her to write this blog the way she did? If Erin were a true ffriend she wouldn't be talking like this, she was on the show last year, build a bridge honey and get over yourself. Why not say something about the way Brandy and Maks dance instead of just ragging on Brandy? Maks is the true friend, Erin is the two-faced skank who apparently only wants Maks to good if only she's involved. What a glory hog! How much longer is she going to stretch out this 15 minutes? She says DWTS doesn't define who you are, but here you are a year later STILL talking about and riding Maks's coattails.

  • Truth Serum alright says:

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you know who Mak's partner is?? Maybe last season he would of. He just stated in an interview “It’s actually funny,” Chmerkovskiy continued. “ Brandy says to me 10 times today, ‘I got your back!’ And I feel bad. That’s not supposed to be her job. It’s supposed to be my job to have her back. We’re actually a partnership. I don’t feel like I’m dancing with a student, I feel like I’m dancing with an equal partner.”
Have you ever seen him go off on any of the judges for Erin like he did Brandy.
It's funny you said deep down she didn't 'intend' to be nasty...Riiiiiiiiiight! Like she said truth serum, it all came out how she really feels! If she was a true friend she wouldn't say the 'ish' she says.
LOL still laughing at him coming to her defense!

  • Michelle says:

Different strokes for different people. There are a lot of people who think Erin is a great woman with a wonderful personality. You might not be one of them, but it doesn't mean they don't exist. Maks has mockingly made fun of Brandy in backstage videos etc many times. You said he wasn't mean about but neither was Erin. Like I said, it's no different than what Erin said and she wasn't even making fun of Brandy, simply pointing something out.
Who do you think was the third best dancer last year then? Kate Gosselin? Nicole and Evan were in a league of their own (and no Brandy or Jennifer wouldn't win if they were on this season) but Erin was the third best dancer when it came to scores so she deserved to be in the finals. And she was entertaining and one of the most improved.

  • Robert says:

What a wonderful fan Maks has. *Sarcasm*

  • Lucy says:

You obviously didn't follow last season or you would know that Maks went out of his way to protect Erin. They had each other's back like Maks and Brandy have each other's. But don't try to pretend like Maks has never done this before.

  • Really ladies, really? says:

Oh Bonnie Puh-lease you are a nutter, I've seen you on Mak's blog talking about how Maks and Erin are meant for each other. I swear you "Team Erin" and "Team Brandy" fans are mad, you all act as if you know Maks and therefore you think you know who he should be dating. This isn't Twilight ladies. You're constant bickering about who Maks is destine to be with is ruining DWTS for me. Just vote on their dancing, not on the love life you think Maks is having. He's not in love with either of them, get a effing grip.

  • Suomynona says:

Maybe he has, but he's never said: "We’re actually a partnership. I don’t feel like I’m dancing with a student, I feel like I’m dancing with an equal partner.” Before.

  • mysteriouswonder89 says:

Anybody with any sense can see Erin is jealous of Brandy , which is very sad . Brandy is obviously a better dancer than you Erin . You seem to have the maturity level of an elementary student . Stop being mean spirited toward someone you don't have a clue who she is as a person or been through in her short life .

  • stu says:

Why shouldn't Erin show some support for Kurt? She said she knew him before the show, is friendly with his wife, and respects him on and off the field. Oh wait, I forgot - she's supposed to hate on everyone who's not partnered with Maks. Silly me.

  • Just talk about the dancing says:

Maks is not in a relationship with Erin or Brandy he is in a relationship withJoni Kilmurry who he has been seeing for several months.

  • Joe Brouder says:

If Bristal Palin wins your dancing contast, that goes to show you the Republicans are really a real bunch of idiots, when their is so much talent on your show, which all she has ia a name of another untalented person.

  • anonymously says:

I read Erin Andrew's article and all of the comments and it was good reading material. Erin has gone through a lot in her life please stop saying unkind things about her. Some of her comments may have stretch the truth but she was only giving Bristol Jennifer and Brandy helpful criticism (food for thought) to perfect their image not their dancing. Erin has nothing to really say bad about Kyle so I suspect that Erin feels his image is just fine.

  • Amazed says:

This is amazing! I am intrigued. I read the article and all the comments, had a look at a few YouTube clips of Maksim with both partners just to get an objective view as I don't watch the show.
Actually, I only know about this because my sister sent me the clip of Brandy & Maksim's waltz and it was, beautiful... enchanting - I loved it. Okay... so I can see what the vehemence from Brandy's fans is all about - the writer is disturbingly narcissistic, constantly compares and has nothing complimentary to say about Brandy other than that "she's great." Hmm... very revealing!
Maybe this has nothing to do with Maksim. The dance I looked at was the freestyle in the finale and I imagine Maksim must feel as if he's won the lottery this season. Sorry, but Erin dances as if she has two left feet with no grace whatsoever. So much more can be done with Brandy and maybe this irks her. Maybe it is difficult for her to acknowledge the chemistry and passion I witnessed in the waltz and how good a partnership they seem to have.
I don't know and I won't judge . What I see is that Brandy & Maksim have the potential to win the trophy, something he could not have achieved with Erin (based on what I've seen), even in a season without the pussycat she refers to in her interview. Ah well, Brandy fans, don't let this drive you crazy. Channel this energy into something more productive.
This Erin obviously feels that focusing on what she shared with Maksim is more important than promoting Brandy. Maybe she just doesn't like her. Beautiful women who are comfortable enough to have their own personality and way of being are often disliked. I think Brandy's going to be a winner at life.

  • alexander3 says:

Reading what Despicable Me (Erin Andrews) had to say about Brandy left me with laughs and giggles. I thought the comments written about Brandy were harsh and scanty in nature.
So Erin you're okay with wanting Brandy to try hard to win for Maks, but just not for herself? Really?! What an oxymoron!
Brandy is not placing her very existence into whether she wins or not . Trust me, she is not about to fall into a million and one pieces if she does not win. However, I know everyone can relate in wanting to obtain a small, personal victory to get through the hurricanes that life can sometimes bring.
I have become intoxicated with seeing how driven and dedicated Brandy is with each dance she performs. She has an amazing work ethic and I think she is an amazing human being. Yes she is an emotional person.....so what! Everybody can't be you! An every ones reaction to a situation, as proven is not going to be the same.
Brandy, keep doing what works for you and what keeps you sane. I think you are a sweetheart with a resplendent personality. I wish you much success. GO TEAM BRAN-DMC!

  • Mae says:

Negativity only fuels more negativity. I am going to say my final piece and let it go. I suggest that we all do.
In my previous post, I stated that I believed Miss Andrews to be a bully. I am a bigger person than that. I don't know Miss Andrews and most likely never will, so I don't know who she truly is to say that she is a bully. When I wrote my earlier post I was fueled on by this thing inside me to always stop injustice. Perhaps, I'm "too emotional". That could be a character "flaw" or maybe just character.
My "name calling" was uncalled for just like Miss Andrews hurtful opinions (not truths) regarding not only Brandy but Bristol and Jennifer were uncalled for and not necessary to write in her blog. In her blog she presented herself as a catty, mean-spirited individual. That's just my opinion; I'm not saying she is only that is what came through in her words. She stated HER opinions in a way that lacked tact; her commentary didn't come off as constructive and in the case of Brandy in particular, they were hurtful. She seemed to either not care or even know the power words can have and affect people.
Her supporters are saying that her words were meant to help Bristol, Jennifer and Brandy "improve their image." This is a DANCING competition. I see nothing wrong with anyone's image on the show. And, didn't you, Miss Andrews say, "people love that you're a normal person, because everyone is." Well in my experience as a "normal person" and I am one, you said so yourself remember "everyone is", well it is NORMAL to miss your children and feel homesick after being away for months and it is NORMAL to cry when you have run your body down and you are struggling with multiple injuries AND it is NORMAL to be emotional when you've worked so hard to accomplish something, to SUCCEED - NOT JUST WIN!!
This has turned into an Erin vs. Brandy War amongst the Erin/Maks Fans and the Brandy/Maks Fans - RIDICULOUS! My issues with Miss Andrews' blog has NOTHING to do with Maks! Who he is in or not in a relationship with - I couldn't care less about. My issues with Miss Andrews' blog is that she mocked Brandy in her blog. (She does sort of treat this show like Survivor. Yes! “Where’s the next meal coming from?!”)
Of course Miss Andrews wants Maks to win and for Brandy to win it FOR Maks. But does she actually want Brandy to win? I don't think she does and I just don't get it... what has Brandy ever done to her?
Miss Andrews, you seem to make a joke out of Brandy and her experience on the show and that I find appalling. "She makes me laugh because she is so emotional...I can't tell if she's praying or if she's about to pass out [Laughs]... Evan and I were kind of laughing about it the other day... Just because you win a mirrorball trophy on DWTS, it doesn't validate your existence."
Miss Andrews, what are readers supposed to make of these comments?
Except that you seem to be a catty, mean individual. And I'd hope that is not the case but so far you haven't seem to want to dispel those opinions.
So if that is how you want to be portrayed, more power to you. I'm choosing to not let your words affect me any longer. At the end of the day, your opinions are not the TRUTH. I suggest that those who had the same issues as me with Miss Andrews blog, no longer fuel this negativity.
Miss Andrews if you believe you are in the right and that what you wrote was constructive and harmless well, there won't be anything I or anyone else can say to change your mind.

This woman wasn't anything to remember when you was a contestant on DWTS... Necole was the one who was rocking and Erin thought she could flirt her way to a win but physically and skillfully...
When Erin was eliminated you could look on her face and tell she was pissed as if she really thought she was going to beat Necole.

  • Awlftopic says:

Erin is nit picking for a reason and it's called jealousy. I have watched DWTS off and on since the beginning and I have never seen Maks be as affectionate and passionate about anyone of his other partners the way he is with Brandy.
And the crazy thing about it is that it comes across so naturally and this is what's bothering Erin... She sees how Maks touches Brandy, she sees how Maks comforts Brandy, she sees how Maks calms Brandy with his kisses and Erin knows that Maks had never responded to her in the same way...

  • Awlftopic says:

You thought she was completely underscored... Now that is a funny statement...
