Erin Andrews on This Week's Insane Dancing with the Stars: 'I Feel Like I Took Truth Serum'
Dancing with the Stars is getting so outrageous that I almost need Erin Andrews on the phone with me as I watch. It's maddening! With Bristol Palin surviving another week and Carrie Ann Inaba sparring with Maks, it's easy to get a little huffy. In our epic interview this week, Miss Andrews discusses her love of Kyle Massey, Brandy's emotions, Maksim Chmerkovskiy's passion, and the possibility that Bristol will make it to the finals.
Yet another zany week, Erin. How did you feel about the "instant dance" idea?
I thought it was a great idea. It's funny, my girlfriends and I were talking during the show and texting. They were saying, "My gosh, if I had been on the show when the instant dance happened, I'd have had a meltdown." I mean, musicality? I do think I can hear beats in the music and stuff, but it's different when you hear the band playing it and you have to perform it. It does get a little chaotic. I was so impressed by the way everybody came out and really seemed to nail it. I didn't think they were going to get time to practice it. That was new to me. I thought they were just going to get the song and have to go. I'm glad they had time to practice.
But I have to tell you, when Kyle came out and did his jive, I was screaming in my living room. He's amazing. I was just so excited for [Kyle] and Lacey; I think he's a contender for the final. He's a contender for the mirror ball. He's just a different kind of dancer. He's just kind of silly! And he's learning every week. When they came out and they did the first instant dance, I was like, "OK, wow. This is incredible."
When I watched him kill it this week, I thought, 'Is the Erin Andrews prophecy coming true?' He might run away with this.
I know! He's phenomenal.
Your boy Maks had a slight kerfluffle with Carrie Ann this week. How did you react? Did you hurl things at the TV? Scream, etc.?
I think that when I first heard them [spar], I was like, "Oh gosh. Oh no." But then when I thought about it what happened afterward when they went to commercial -- he's so sweet. He was just sticking up for Brandy. A lot of the time when the judges comment on the choreography, the way the dance was planned out, the pros take it upon themselves to say, "Just judge her for the dance. Don't judge her for the choreography." That's all he was doing. He's very, very protective over his stars. He wants them to feel comfortable. He made a comment to me one night before the show started about my wardrobe, and he said, "I just want you to walk down those stairs and feel the most glamorous and beautiful you've ever felt in your entire life." He wants nothing but for his stars to feel the absolute best about themselves. You could see from the package that they showed with Brandy, he said, "Look, it's just about us. It's about nobody else. Do this for yourself." That was just Papa Bear taking over and being really protective over his baby. I knew they'd make a big deal about it on all the gossip shows and in the tabloids and on the results show. I don't know if you saw, but afterward, when Kurt was out, Maks went down and -- he's so sweet -- he hugged Kurt right away. And then he went off -- I watched him in the background -- he hugged Carrie Ann. I think in the end Carrie Ann knows what he's doing. He lets his emotions get the best of him, but that's why he's so wonderful.
Can you recall any times when the judges criticized you for things you couldn't control, like the choreography?
Oh, absolutely. Our samba that we did -- I had this gorgeous purple feather outfit with a nude top and embroidery. Our story that we were telling -- and this is why I love Maks, but -- he thinks of these different stories. Our dance, the song was "When I Get You Alone." He was like, "I want to pretend you're coming home from a glamorous ball. And I'm this guy, and I'm all over you. And you're like, 'No, no, no, no. Let me have a second.'" It was so awesome. There was a part when I rip off his sleeves and then I rip open his shirt, and then he ripped off his shirt. Well, Len went to town that night and just said, "I'm tired of it, Maks. She's a good dancer. I'm tired of you taking off your clothes." And Maks was like, "You're not listening! You're not understand the theme of our song." I got OK scores. I didn't get the greatest scores on it. But he really felt like we were being penalized -- I was being penalized -- because Maks took his shirt off. The next week we did our foxtrot where we joked he would take his shirt off, but then we decided not to in the middle of the dance. Yeah, he got really frustrated with the judges. He said, "You're penalizing Erin for something I created."
Jennifer Grey racked up a perfect score this week. If any dance this week was worth 30 points, do you think it was hers?
Well, her instant dance got the perfect score, right?
Yes.
I thought her instant dance was hot. I mean, that's what I wrote down in my notes. I wrote, "Wow. J. Hot." I'm such a dork in that I thought one of the moves was like in Dirty Dancing when he put his hand down her arm and then he spun her out. And that extension that she held was so beautiful. I have goosebumps thinking about it. I wasn't surprised that she got all 10s in that routine at all. Now I will say -- in her first dance, I loved the dance, I loved the dress, I was excited when I saw her dance, but (sighs) again, with all the "My body's falling apart" stuff. I read on somebody's tweet, I forget whose it was, but they were like, "Is she lying to us about her injury?" She builds up this "I'm hurt, I'm hurt, I'm hurt," and then she comes out, does the dance, and she's insane. So I can understand her body falling apart, but I appreciated this week that there wasn't a lot of crying. I appreciated that. She can't help that her body's falling apart; I like her playing it low-key, instead of being hysterical and everything like that. She went out there and I think she put herself on top of the leader board again. From her first dance to her instant dance, it was "Wow. Wow. Wow." That's the girl we saw at the beginning of the season and I think she put herself back on top.
She's got to be really, really careful with her packages though in the next two weeks. You don't want America to just get tired of the crying and the "My body's falling apart." It's OK because at this point in the competition, everybody's body is falling apart. Evan [Lysacek] had broken toes! He had a head injury. I had a broken foot which I didn't know about. We just knew my foot was swollen every single day, and we didn't know why. And I had a back injury. The day of the finale, we were doing run-through, we did my dance, and something popped in the middle of run-through. I started hysterically crying, and Maks was like, "What, what, what?" And I'm like, "It's fine, let's just go." At this stage of the game, everybody is hurt. You can't cry about it, and you have to soldier on.
It sounds like you're saying that Jennifer is the front-runner, but maybe Kyle or Brandy can take that from her very soon.
I'll be very, very honest. I think Jennifer is absolutely the front-runner right now. She's America's sweetheart. I'd hate to sound corny, but she's "Baby" to America. I think everybody loves the storyline that she's 50 years old and she's doing things with her body that are incredible. She looks wonderful. But I'll be very candid in the fact at all these packages and America's vote could really hurt her if she continues being very emotional. She can be injured and she can talk about that, but don't use that as the only thing you're talking about. She has a beautiful husband, a gorgeous daughter, friends who come to support her. Maybe use that. It was nice to see her dad in the package. But there is a guy named Kyle Massey who is so cute, so likable, and so fun. And he makes fun of himself -- and I used to do that, people love it when you make fun of yourself -- and he is becoming very charming to America. She needs to watch out for that. He may come out of the back, the back of the field there, and take over all the votes. Because people may start to get tired of it.

Once again another great interview from Erin! She's addressing the exact same issues that I see on every message board, she truly gets it. People, if you think she's talking out of her butt, just go read what others are saying about Jennifer, Brandy and Kyle. I feel the exact same way. Kyle is fun to watch because he's really enjoying it. Jennifer is a great dancer but she cries too much. And Brandy does take the show too seriously. It's just a plastic trophy, not the Nobel Peace price. Erin's interviews are becoming the highlight of this rather dull season (save for Kyle).
I can see this BOTH ways. It's getting down to the wire, every little vote counts, and if Brandy wants to draw in more voters, say those who aren't sure who to vote for now, it wouldn't hurt if she reined it in a little, we all now know that she really wants to win, no need to say it on every show. It's time for her to just breath and in enjoy herself and have fun with it. Erin should be a little more supportive, I'm totally getting that she doesn't like Brandy, to each her own some people do not get along, but she shouldn't punish Maks for it, if he's such a good friend support him and talk his team up no matter what, she should want him to get that MBT even if she isn't the one to help him get it. Erin reminds me of Tyra Banks in that she can't stop talking about herself. I say BOTH sides have valid points, but both sides are yelling too loud to hear reason.
Cannot stand that phony Brandy, hope Bristol knocks her out next week. And Carrie Anne was out of line, not Max.
Wow! Normally I like Erin, voted for her like crazy, but was she PMSing our what? At first I was like what's the big deal she hasn't said anything that bad she's just being honest, but then... MEOW!, that last paragraph makes her seem really petty, petulant, and shallow. I'm not the biggest Brandy fan, but c'mon Erin you sound like a jealous has-been when you spew catty little comments like that, then in true narcissistic fashion bring the conversation back to you and Maks. I can't believe you just another mean girl.

Guess the videos show what some of us felt to be true. Nothing more telling of a person's personality than how they react when they don't have to be "on". Mean girl... "Brandy's wondering where her next meal is coming from"...WOW!

She essentially is trying to tell Brandy (Actually she trying to convince herself), that Maks treats all his "STARS" this way, and she shouldn't feel special.

But the problem is, Erin is seeing what we are all seeing, their is some special kind of Chemistry going on with Brandy and Maks. If you listen to his interview with Brook after performing the Foxtrot, Maks said,
"I think every partnership is brand new and it's like doing it all over again. I just want it for her you know, she's doing amazing, we went through a lot, and she's come into her own, and she is the "PERFECT" Partnership for me."
Now if Erin noticed Maks going to Carrie Ann to give her an apology hug, she also noticed these words as well... It is Killing her....LOL!

Okay - I was never a fan of Miss Andrews. I wasn't "not a fan" either. I had no feelings one way or the other.
To be honest, I didn't have clue who she was until her stint on DWTS and I didn't watch her season. So, I never cared about the Erin/Maks showmance/romance - whatever. And, after reading this I am so thankful I didn't watch her. I have zero tolerance for meanness.
Miss Andrews, your commentary on Brandy, her emotions and how she is coping with being on the show were just catty and cruel!
Miss Andrews, you don't need to concern yourself with Brandy's emotional state. You are obviously no friend of her's.
Brandy is a highly talented and successful woman who portrays herself as a woman with class and dignity. She had already created a name for herself in the entertainment industry, probably while you were still in high school behaving just like you are now, a catty "mean girl" picking on those you know are brighter and better than you. To say the you sit and LAUGH at someone for being emotional?!? What satisfaction do you get out of that. What you are Miss Andrews is a Bully! And that last question/answer was beyond juvenile and way out of line. Brandy knows that it is a TV Show and that win or lose it won't make or break her. Just like your catty "mean girl" attitude and comments won't.
And THANK YOU for the numerous mentions of how you talk to Maks and discuss Brandy.... Someone (I would hope it would be a friend but not sure if you know the meaning of the word at this point) should have told you that you sound pathetic and desperate. AND if Maks is discussing Brandy with you - then SHAME on him; he will lose a lot of fans because of that. Way to go!

God, you people are ridiculous. Grow the hell up; you sound like bitchy, jealous tweens. Erin has nothing against Brandy. There is not one thing she said that isn't true. Brandy IS too emotional and putting too much importance on winning. It's one thing to want to win and another to HAVE to win. She acts like her life will be worth nothing if she doesn't. And I vote for Brandy.
Erin, keep up the great commentary. I love hearing your insights. It's fun to hear from someone who actually lived it. You and Maks were the only team I voted for last season. You must be talking about Erin who's the one acting like a bitchy tween . What said about Brandy in the closing article shows she has no class . She needs to grow the hell up . I am so glad I didn't watch DWTS when she was on . She is jealous and it shows every time she writes an article . From what I saw of her and Mak on you-tube was nothing to brag about . Get over yourself Erin! When I read this article I was reading for one reason because I knew I would be correct in my thinking that Erin would come across as negative toward Maks and Brandy and a possible win for them this season.

Erin what is your problem ? Why are you saying negative things about Brandy. You don't know her on a personal level . She has done nothing to you . Mak has had better partners than you . Another note, for someone who came in 3rd you sure have a lot to say about the show like you won. I mean who are you, the dancing with the stars God. You were on season 10 so their were NINE season before you and I have NEVER heard a past contestant sound like you, especially of her former partner's new partner. Bitter Much Erin!

Seeing all the overreactions in the comments just shows how much Erin hit the nerve because she's seeing it the way others are seeing it. This is exactly what is been said about Jennifer and Brandy in the public. If they don't learn how to have fun and enjoy it, it's going to cause them votes. Btw, Maks has himself said all these same things about Brandy (and Bristol and Jennifer), yet I don't see anyone saying how much he hates Brandy. It goes both ways right? If Brandy's own partner sees that there are issues that need to be worked on, it's easy to see why Erin sees them as well.

If Erin doesn't want her Blog nit picked to death then perhaps she should stop posting it and being so nit pick herself. I'm not an Erin or Brandy fan really, just started watching DWTS this year, but I have to say it's the last part of this Blog that makes this Erin chick seem petty and jealous. I don't know her but she really needs to let this show go.
TRUTH FOR ERIN:
1. Brandy is an International known R& B singer. Unlike your profession, her career is based highly on her fan support. Maybe for your season it was not about winning the trophy and thats cool. But this is her season and she is focused , and maybe that is her calling to Win #1 this season. Maks has a partner this year that sees#1, and sometimes thats what it takes. Gaining fan support through winning and publicity from that will be great for her upcoming music and projects- which WILL directly affect her family and career to support her family. Music artist are Very passionate, thats what makes great music is the honesty.
2. You said she needs to goof around like you ..umm not everybody thinks what you were doing was cute. I actually get Brandy's humor alot more. She makes me laugh every week. I didn't get your humor. But from reviews alot of your fans thought you were great...Point..people are different
3. Personally Erin, I didn't think you were very good last year. Yes, you did overcome alot throughout the competion and that is worthy of praise and Great for you. You were given really difficult routines and gave excellent effort. However, I'm still not sure why you were in the top #3 with Nicole. I dont even think you would be in the top 3 on this season( Truthfully). But I know alot of people love Maks and want to see him win.
4. As far as dating... I dont know Erin, Maks, or Brandy. Thats between you guys. I didnt look like Erin was his type because Erin and Karina are completly different to me. But who knows, Erin could be the one?? If anything Brandy seems to be more like Karina( who he was engaged to ). In the end Brandy has a good relationship with Maks now, and Erin was a good partner with Maks in their season and continue to keep in touch, as so noted in this blog. Hopefully their is no real jealousy. In Erin's defense its always hard to see someone else with someone who you had a bond with.
I mean duhhh hello, Maksim WAS Erin's partner, now he's Brandy's so I would think that there would be less commenting about Bristol or Jennifer because neither danced with Maksim. Do you get the common denominator here... MAKSIM.

I'm not a Brandy fan, not by a long shot, but after reading this I'm going to give my votes to her, because I don't like Erin and I want Brandy and Maks to win the MBT just to make Erin mad. People love that you’re a normal person, because everyone is." Define normal first of all, and trust me you not a lot of people's cup of tea. I find you to be mean arrogant and passive aggressive, just like the popular girls who bully in high school. Really Erin, if your head gets any bigger you won't be able to get out of bed in the morning. I hope you win it all now Brandy and hit Erin in the face with the MBT.
I think you're missing the point here. I said Maks has said these exact same things about Brandy that Erin mentioned. Going after Erin for the comments but not Maks is hypocritical. If Erin has to take the heat, so should Maks. Simple as that. But he gets a free pass because he's partnered with Brandy? Or calls her a friend? Doesn't make sense. Erin has called Brandy a nice girl many times. I don't see what those quotes have anything to do with this.
Yeah I read that blog too, I don't think Brandy is getting a fair rap. He also says that Brandy tried to get him to fly to Russia to visit is grandmother before she died, she even had her publicist call his publicist and try and convince him, but Maks just couldn't do it, but he was really grateful and touched that she tried. Brandy has said that she really wants Maks to win this year, and she was with him the whole time his grandmother was sick and then died, and maybe that's why she's so emotional because she knows what Maks has been though and wants him to win. I don't know why Erin would be jealous of Brandy, as Brandy and Maks have stated several times they aren't dating and don't see each other that way, they're more like brother and sister. So if Maks isn't with you Erin it isn't because of Brandy, maybe it's because of your condescending attitude.
